Summary

Tucked away in a high-tech Tactical Operations Center, inside an isolated safehouse in the Horn of Africa, sits Agency analyst Zack Altringham. He is Kenyan-born, Princeton-educated, badly burnt-out - and condemned by his language and cultural skills to a lifetime of fighting America's shadow counter-terror wars. But when another mystery epidemic breaks out, terrifyingly quickly it reaches a tipping point and chaos descends - and Zack and his team (including two former Team Six SEALs) are trapped between the millstones of the sick and the dying on one side, and heavily armed militias on the other. Soon their "safe" house is in flames, and their only remaining option is to get in their up-armored SUV and try to escape the imploding gravity well of the city, to the safety of the American military base in Djibouti. But by then, will there be anywhere safe left on Earth to escape to?

Good prequel, read it any time!

If you like this kind of thing (and I have discovered that I do) then you'll like this. Good, fast paced zombie action seen through the eyes of a Special Ops team with excellent narration from RC Bray. This short book gives the background to the main "Arisen" series and can be used as a good taster.

However, it's worth considering not reading this one first. I read it between books 5 and 6 as an example and I would suggest it's better this way as the back story means more by then. From other reviews it seems this does stand alone but I genuinely enjoyed going back to the story that until then had just been hinted at.

Your choice of course, but either way it's a credit well spent.

Great story.

Having read all the Arisen books I was interested to see how this solo effort by Fuchs would fit in and workout. As usual the performance by RC was impeccable, though a few of his accents sounded a bit strange, but what the heck, he is so good at what he does. The story is pretty lean and well written with good momentum. It gives the background to the ZA and fits in well with the storyline in book 7. The book is so filmic and has such a strong visual aspect to its narritive that I would not be surprised if its snapped up by a film company. A screenplay would fall out of this story with few problems.

Future Zombie Film Right Here!

Listened to this after the first 3 and it is just as good. A good precursor and glimpse into the future books.

As usual R.C. Bray delivered it spectacularly and the writing by Fuchs is scarily believable in how the virus came to be. I also became invested in the people (like in the first 3), and remember whispering "oh s**t" at a particular point (sorry don't want to spoil it).

Having been influenced heavily by the military in my youth, the subtle humour is also very good, but may go over some people's head.

After lstening to the 4 books available, I have pre ordered the next 3 without hesitation. I need to know what happens! That alone makes it a good book. But coupled with the writing, humour and scary possible realism of it, it has quickly become one of my favourite series.

Long may it continue.

The beginning of the ZA

Excellent prequel to series.
Having heard 1-3 wasn't sure what to expect but didn't disappoint. Filled in background rather than repeat anything. And a few teasers as to how series may develop. Can't wait for book 4

Great Story

Great start to the launch of a new story, really enjoyed it and am continuing the series. Had to slow the narrator down as a bit fast for me. Good job as Podium Audible have fantastic reads.

Pompous American Nationalism

A horrid mix of American nationalism, distasteful hero worship and very poor narrating. R. C. Bray seems to think that Kenyans speak English with a South African accent. Sloppy work.
