Summary

From New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Jana DeLeon, the fifth book in the hilarious Miss Fortune series.

Things are starting to look up for Fortune Redding. Even though her life was at stake, the CIA assassin had balked at taking on a new identity in Sinful, Louisiana. But instead of hating it like she'd thought she would, Fortune now has friends she cares about and just finished up an incredible first date with the sexiest deputy in the state. Sure, there's been a murder or two that she's gotten mixed up in since she arrived in town, but she's hoping all of that is behind her.

But when someone almost kills Deputy Carter LeBlanc, Fortune tosses her dreams of peace and quiet into the muddy bayou and shifts back into being the deadly trained professional that she is. With the help of Ida Belle and Gertie, Fortune launches a manhunt, intending to find a killer before he tries again.

Reminds me of...

This isn't the best review because it's a recommendation for another series: Dead End Jobs by Elaine Viets. I bring this up because if you've made it this far with Fortune then you like the style of mystery and Dead End Jobs is very similar. Anyway, Gator Bait is more of the same for the series. I liked it but it may need some more development on her would-be asssain.

Celebrating Strong Women

Jana Deleon has a real talent for creating strong, confident and fascinating women, unlike the pathetic wimpy girls so popular in recent romantic fiction.

In Gator Bait, the Swamp Team 3 (Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie) helped deputy Carter investigate the possibility of someone running guns through Sinful, Louisiana. While the plot was well written, it's the town's unique characters and humorous situations which make this series so entertaining.

FYI, these books are light on swearing, sex or graphic violence but heavy on chuckles.

Story is great but narrator could be better

Simple. The narrator should be changed. I’ve heard the the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich, the narration is great. The narrator brings the characters to life, gives them personalities. I feel this narrator hasn’t really done that. She every once in a while misses the correct pronounciation for the names or words and mixes up the accent she uses for this person or that. I still laughed though.

Mystery, action, suspense, humor, and ...

...a touch of romance. A young female CIA assassin has a price on her head by an international arms dealer, so she takes the name of Fortune Redding and moves to the town of Sinful, Louisiana where she meets two old ladies, The Geritol Mafia named Ida Bell and Gertie, who were spies for the US during the Vietnam war. The entire town believes that Fortune is a librarian who is in Sinful for three months to settle the estate of her aunt. Ida Bell and Gertie soon learn the truth about Fortune and her unique skills. Meanwhile handsome deputy sheriff Carter LeBlanc develops a (mutual) romantic interest in Fortune as he continues to believe she is a librarian he must protect. That sets up this marvelous and funny suspense mystery series. The closest suspense humor series I am aware of is the wonderful Shelby Nichols series by Colleen Helme.

Gator Bait is Book 5 in the 10 novel (so far) series by Louisiana author Jana DeLeon. I have previously reviewed the prior four novels. Fortune, Ida Bell and Gertie once again find danger and adventure in Gator Bait. Once again much of the novel is laugh-out-loud funny despite real dangers and suspense. Deputy Carter LeBlanc finally asks Fortune for a date; that date starts events that puts Carter's life at risk and brings the US ATF to town.

Cassandra Campbell narrates the series perfectly and she is the voice of Fortune Redding. I love the Miss Fortune series and recommend it. Start with Louisiana Longshot, the first novel in the series.

Swamp Team 3 versus the ATF

Another very entertaining book in the series! Gator Bait is book 5 in the Miss Fortune Mystery series. This series is set in Sinful, Louisiana, USA and follows Fortune, who is a CIA assassin in hiding, and old ladies Gertie and Ida Belle, who are lifelong Sinful residents and ex-spy war veterans, as they help solve a string of various crimes and murders.

This book is and the entire series is full of humor. I decided to check out a new-to-me genre called Cozy Mysteries and someone recommended this series. Once I listened to the first book, I couldn't stop. I have been listening to all of the books back to back.

In Gator Bait, someone tries killing the town Sheriff Deputy, Carter, who is also just starting to date Fortune. The ladies jump into action to try to solve the case, all while avoiding the ATF agents who have shown up and taken over. Also, the votes are being tallied for the new town mayor and if mean and spiteful Celia wins, she might just fire Carter and everyone at the Sheriff's office and try to run Fortune out of town.

I recommend this series and suggest that you read each book in order as it builds upon the prior story and makes everything that much more entertaining and enjoyable.

The narrator does a good job and I really like that it is the same narrator for each of the books. I have all of their voices committed to memory.

Point out a Flaw in the Narration

I enjoy this series of action novels and the narration is excellent except one flaw. The name Hebert is pronounced incorrectly throughout the series. The name is correctly pronounced "ā-bare," not "hē-bert." It's a bit annoying even though the narrator is excellent in all other respects.

Not the author’s best effort.

Cassandra Campbell makes this thoroughly mediocre story enjoyable. Miss Fortune remains an engaging character but development of the supporting cast lags in this installment.

Good book, weak ending

For someone who is a highly trained CIA assassin, she forgets her training at the end of this book. Other than that it's a good story.

Jana DeLeon and Cassandra Campbell are the PERFECT pair.

This review will cover all books up until this point. So far the previous books as well as this one is a solid 5 stars.

The Miss Fortune books are a laugh-a-minute and believe me when I say have tissues and Tylenol. The Swamp Team 3 will have you laughing so hard you will not only be ugly crying, but it’s entirely possible you will pull every single muscle in your abdomen.

These books definitely need to be read/listened to in order. Each book picks up directly where the last one left off. If you start with say this book you will be a bit lost especially when Fortune references Ahmad the Middle Eastern arms dealer who has a $1,000,00 bounty on Fortune’s head. Fortune is an assassin with the CIA. Someone in the organization is leaking information to Ahmad and his men. In book 1 she is set up while on a mission and blows her cover. Her boss at the CIA sends her to Sinful Louisiana and Fortune poses as her boss’s niece Sandy Sue who is a school librarian. During Fortune’s first month in Sinful she has made friends with two lifelong geriatric best friends Ida Belle, and Gertie who a few locals refer to as the Geritol Mafia. Since arriving and immediately becoming super tight the three ladies who all have very unique skills. There have been countless murders, arson, car and boat theft, countless breaking and entering, as well as numerous instances of the three interfering with different Police investigations. All crimes beginning with the theft have been committed by The Swamp Team 3.

I am hooked on these books. Upon reading the Shaye Archer books and LOVING it them I had to find more by the same author.

Last Thursday evening I began this series and am easily doing a book and a half per day. This series is that GOOD. I don’t know where Ms. DeLeon comes up with the hilarious dialogue in these books, but it’s pure comedic gold. Each book brings new laughs and just when you think it cannot be topped DeLeon does it Again, and Again.

This series is a MUST listen. Great writing and amazing narration.
