About this listen

This classic Victorian thriller was first produced in 1935. Jack Manningham is slowly, deliberately driving his wife, Bella, insane. He has almost succeeded when help arrives in the form of a former detective, Rough, who believes Manningham to be a thief and murderer. Aided by Bella, Rough proves Manningham's true identity and finally Bella achieves a few moments of sweet revenge for the suffering inflicted on her. I love this author and thoroughly enjoyed this adaption. I'd also recommend hangover square and craven house audible book by Patrick Hamilton.

a great introduction to Patrick Hamilton.

I saw this play at a local theatre a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Okay, the 'whodunnit' aspect of the story is set out from the start, there's no dramatic twist or anything but I still thought it was a great story. This adaptation is excellent so I am surprised by the reviews that say otherwise. Emilia Fox is fantastic as the gaslighted wife and plays the distress well (with plenty of practice from playing the most danger-prone pathologist on television - we love her for it though!). I am very pleased to have it in my library so that I can enjoy it as many times as I want!

Excellent adaptation!

Plot a little weak but very well performed by all the cast. A most enjoyable production.

Excellent

This excellent play by Patrick Hamilton suffers in this woefully inadequate rendition which is a shame because the cast does include the talented Emilia Fox. This poorly directed audio piece will not withstand the test of time.

A disappointing adaptation.

I am having to keep the words to this production to a minimum as there is so much to be said to describe just how appallingly bad this production is. Yes, l have read the book as well as having enjoyed watching both 1940’s black and white film versions of this story many times, both are one of my FAVOURITE films. I also own a BBC full cast radio production of this story which is a pleasure to listen to. However; this production is so over acted by Emilia Fox PATHETIC & APPALLING it is VERY PAINFUL to listen to. In the original storyline the wife is a STRONG woman who is being slowly dragged down and as the Police Inspector tells her she is ‘being driven off her head” by her mentally deranged husband. She is not at all a weak person nor is she childlike nor is she pathetic as Emilia Fox portrays her, nor does the character constantly repeat her lines like a lunatic, and as for the husband, this actor is so wooden it is embarrassing. Both actors reduce this great classic to such RIDICULOUSNESS it is SHAMEFUL. Returned for refund immediately.
