About this listen
Gangsta Granny Strikes Again!, from Children's author David Walliams.
Our hero Ben is bored beyond belief after he is made to stay at his grandma s house. She’s the boringest grandma ever: all she wants to do is to play Scrabble, and eat cabbage soup. But there are two things Ben doesn’t know about his grandma:
1) She was once an international jewel thief.
2) All her life, she has been plotting to steal the Crown Jewels, and now she needs Ben’s help…

THE BEST BOOK EVER

A good continuation of Ben's story, this. You don't HAVE to know the first but it does help - Ben's grief at losing his much-loved Grandma is present even a year later. His parents are still ballroom mad. He still wants to be a plumber. Life goes on as normal... but then 'someone' starts stealing important items again... and it's not Ben and his Gran (oh yes - spoiler from book 1: she was a jewel thief!).
With a neighbour watch on his case, and Raj the shopkeeper (wahey!) by his side, Ben wants to find out who is taking over his Granny's role and clear his name (somehow just an accusation means he's a suspect).
The cast of characters all take on their fair shame of amusing scenes and lines, from PC Fudge all the way up to... well, people of high influence, shall we say? There's also the very funny ballroom costumes to enjoy as Ben can't escape his parents' preoccupation with all that glitters.
I did think Granny's friend was a bit of a wasted opportunity, I was hoping for more from her. Also I felt the ending with Ben's parents suddenly seeming a lot more loving and attentive seemed forced and didn't fit their characters/the entirety of the plot at all.
But this is much less madcap than a few of Walliams' recent titles, and gives the reader what they want, with oodles of laughs and a flowing, very easy-to-read story that even quite young children can follow and laugh at. And yes, Walliams' plugs his Walliamsictionary title, as always.
The audiobook is nicely narrated by a cast of famous names, including the author, and is great for the car or to read along with.
Nice to see Raj getting a good sidekick role and lots of 'air time'. This one will make a good TV Christmas special, of course.
For ages 7-12 (though younger will love listening).
With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.
Entertaining sequel with plenty of Raj
