Summary

As 80-year-old Mrs Cleo Threadgoode tells Evelyn Couch her life story, she escapes the Rose Terrace Nursing Home and returns to Whistle Stop, Alabama, in the 1930s. She tells the tale of two women: the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend, Ruth, who, back in the 30s, ran a little place offering good barbecue, good coffee, all kinds of love and laughter, and even an occasional murder. And as the past unfolds, the present, for Evelyn and for us, will never be quite the same.

Too short

This is such a wonderful story but was far too short and over to soon. I would have preferred the unabridged version. Now I need to find the book so I read it in full.

Too Short!

I gave only 4 stars for 'overall' as I was very disappointed to discover that this was the abridged version, however, it was beautifully done and just left me wanting more - please Audible, can we have the whole book?

This is an abridged version

It wasn’t clear in the description but this is only an abridged version. I wanted the full length book so now wish I’d not wasted a credit!

Friendship is a special thing

I saw the film when it came out, loved it, watched it many times over the years. Much later I read the book, loved its skilful combo of humorously telling very serious things, read it a few times. It really is a book that delivers on subtext, as I suppose it kinda had to back then. I see all the comments about it being dated re: racism and feminism. Fair enough to that, but I also think it stays true to the times it depicts. People, even the well intentioned ones, spoke and behaved differently then and it is good for us to learn how things changed. We should be content we have come a long way. The profound things the book touches upon are still true today - friendship, community, staying true to yourself in the face of adversity, being kind to those around us.

A wonderful book...but too short

The narrator/author does a really good job of bringing the story to life which leaves you needing and wanting more! If I had not watched the film I would have found it hard keeping up with the swift date changes and the brief stories. I didn't realise that this was the abridged version and don't really understand why such a wonderful story would be cut down. All the same it was a lovely book, but I will be getting the real thing to read properly and get the full story.

Hit all the important points.

I was so disappointed not to find a full version of the book on audio, and I expected this one to be very brief and skip so much, especially Albert who was a HUGE part of the book for me, personally. But they fit so much into it and with so much love. Obviously the full thing is a must read/listen, hence the 4/5, but it really was better than expected.

An incredible book

I had seen the film as a child, and only realised that it had been based on a book more recently. I read the book, cover to cover, and was so pleased to find the Audible version read by the author herself. It is a shame that it is an abridged version, however the characters are still brought to life and fill your heart. An incredible story.

Abridged version, but still a great listen.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe to be better than the print version?

This was the abridged version, so the full book would have to be even better. Loved the author reading the story ... gave credibility and sense of being in the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Listen to audio books when walking and look forward to each occasion. However, this is not a particularly long version and if you had a few hours up your sleeve, it would be great to listen to this in one sitting.
