Summary

The number-one New York Times best-selling author of How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale is back with the inspiring story of a woman who shakes things up in her life to find greater meaning.

In I Almost Forgot About You, Dr. Georgia Young's wonderful life - great friends, family, and successful career - aren't enough to keep her from feeling stuck and restless. When she decides to make some major changes in her life, quitting her job as an optometrist and moving house, she finds herself on a wild journey that may or may not include a second chance at love. Like Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, I Almost Forgot About You will show legions of listeners what can happen when you face your fears, take a chance, and open yourself up to life, love, and the possibility of a new direction.

Critic reviews

"Terry McMillan's novels have always been about telling the uncensored truth about friends, family, lovers, and oneself. Through addictively revealing conversations - including an instructive one about the sexual prowess of men who made the A list - McMillan's narrator is the ideal running commentator on what smart women do to reach the pinnacle of success and what they must do to get the hell out before it's too late. It's a story about both reinvention and acceptance, told in McMillan's quintessential voice, now even more expansive, prismatically perceptive, and laugh-aloud generous in how we talk about love and all its wonders." (Amy Tan, New York Times best-selling author of The Joy Luck Club and The Valley of Amazement)
"The warmth and wisdom we have come to expect from Terry McMillan are on full display and you won't be able to walk away from Georgia and her exuberant life. This is that thrilling kind of novel that reminds us how sometimes, fairy tales happen when we least expect them, if only we open ourselves to possibility." (Roxane Gay, New York Times best-selling author of Bad Feminist and An Untamed State)
"The only thing better than reading a Terry McMillan novel is hearing her deliver one of her own works.... Listeners will feel sad, joyful, and amused - and may be tempted to replicate Georgia's quest in their own lives." ( AudioFile)

I Almost Forgot About You

I gave this book 2 stars bc it seems to have a good storyline from the synopsis. Honestly, the narration was so bad I could not listen beyond the second chapter. I am an avid fan of Ms. McMillan's writing. On the other hand her voice is worse than finger nails grating on a chalk board. I want my credit back, and then I will purchase the ebook to read. Ms. McMillan no disrespect, you are an amazingly talented writer. Please leave narrating to the experts. You don't do your book justice. Submitted with honesty, love and much respect.

The narration of this book is terrible

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator, would have made this book much better

Would you ever listen to anything by Terry McMillan again?

Yes, but only if she is not narrating.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her voice is so flat when reading this book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from I Almost Forgot About You?

I only got through the first chapter.

Something's Terribly Wrong...

...when a publisher doesn't dissuade the author from narrating her own work when she either just doesn't have the performance/acting/reading ability or just doesn't enjoy her own work enough.

Based on the reviews, I had to check out this audiobook. A narrator, especially an author-narrator, can't be THAT BAD, can they?

Yes. Yes, they can.

My actual quick-notes on the narration during and after listening for as long as I was physically, emotionally, and psychologically able to: "She sounds bored, perturbed, pauses weird, suddenly speaks again, shouting. Reads too slowly. Suddenly shouts chapter headings."

Perhaps the story itself is amazing, but listening to it is painful, shocking, heartbreaking, and that destroys the ability to hear/feel the story itself. For the days Terry McMillan sat in a studio recording this, she just wasn't in the mood and not at all a fan of her own work. Supposed "director" and "producer" of this audio presentation cited at the end of the audiobook: what in the HECK were you thinking??! Did you LISTEN to it? DID you direct Ms. McMillan?? (don't admit to it if you did) Were you contractually obligated to employ the author as narrator and unable or unwilling to secure a performance artist to narrate instead to ensure a quality product that would certainly earn more royalties for all involved? Wrong decision.

Cute story, HORRIBLE Narrator

This book held my interest because of the story but it was a hard fight not to quite in the first five minutes due to the very unsuitable narrator.

Great Story, Horrible Narration

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes and No. I would recommend they buy paper back. Narration was boring.

What other book might you compare I Almost Forgot About You to and why?

none

What didn’t you like about Terry McMillan’s performance?

Narration was horrible. I couldn't distinguish between characters.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no

Excellent

Well she did it again. I loved the book. Her reading, not so much. Her voice wasn't meant for this, but regardless the story was great.

A different narrator needed

I enjoyed the story line; however, Ms. McMillan's narrating was mono toned and made it a difficult to continue to the end.

Good Story but ....

The story was pretty good but I did not like the narration - the performance was very flat. I found myself constantly replaying certain parts because I felt like I missed some details or something was confusing. I wonder if I would have felt the same way if I was actually reading the book. The story line was pretty good but I lost interest towards the end.
