Summary
Mohammed ibn Abdallah, der Prophet des Islams, hat mit 25 Jahren zum ersten Mal geheiratet. Die damals 40-jährige Kaufmannsfrau Khadidscha bint Khuwaylid hatte ihm einen Heiratsantrag gemacht. Khadidscha ist die bemerkenswerteste Frau der islamischen Geschichte. Vor der Ehe mit Mohammed war sie zweimal verheiratet und hatte mehrere Kinder. Zeit seiner Ehe mit Khadidscha hat Mohammed keine weitere Frau geheiratet, obwohl die Vielehe damals in Mekka üblich war. Nach dem Tod seiner einflussreichen Gattin floh Mohammed von Mekka nach Medina, wo er auch zum politischen Führer seiner aufstrebenden Gemeinde wurde. Mohammed heiratete in seiner letzten Lebensdekade ein Dutzend Frauen, die wie seine erste Gemahlin den Ehrentitel "Mutter der Gläubigen" erhielten. Die herausragende Bedeutung seiner Frauen bei der Entstehung des Islams hat nicht verhindern können, dass sich Frauen im Laufe der islamischen Geschichte immer neuen von Männern entworfenen Regeln beugen mussten. Islamische Frauenrechtlerinnen berufen sich heute verstärkt auf das frühislamische Erbe.
