About this listen

One of the most remarkable things about this book, the "mother of all monster stories", is that is was written by a teenager, the 19-year-old wife of Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The story concerns a scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who conducts a great experiment to see if he can create a living being from the body parts of corpses. Only when the experiment is successful does he begin to think of the ethics and consequences of what he has done. The creature he created becomes embittered when he finds that no one will love him because of his appearance. Dr. Frankenstein agrees to make is a mate, but then reneges and destroys the half-made female. His original creation vows revenge.

The book is both and incredible horror novel and a cautionary tale about a scientist who experiments first and thinks about the consequences later - something we can certainly appreciate today.
