About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Colin Salmon known for his starring roles in Resident Evil and Alien Vs Predator. He is also known for his role as Charles Robinson alongside Pierce Brosnan's James Bond. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by Maurice Hindle, read by Peter Noble.

A terrifying vision of scientific progress without moral limits, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein leads the reader on an unsettling journey from the sublime beauty of the Swiss alps to the desolate waste of the arctic circle.

Obsessed with the idea of creating life itself, Victor Frankenstein plunders graveyards for the material with which to fashion a new being, shocking his creation to life with electricity. But this botched creature, rejected by its creator and denied human companionship, sets out to destroy Frankenstein and all that he holds dear. Mary Shelley's chilling gothic tale was conceived when she was only eighteen, living with her lover Percy Shelley near Lord Byron's villa on Lake Geneva. It would become the world's most famous work of Gothic horror, and Frankenstein's monster an instantly-recognisable symbol of the limits of human creativity.

Really great story, the narrator is a bit slow with his pauses, meaning he takes a while to say things and sounds really weird if you speed it up. Overall not an issue though, loved this book

Amazing book

the narration is annoyingly quiet! I feel ges trying but he borders on a whisper throughout the entire book. it sets an adequately sombre tone but it feels dull and monotone after a while. the story however is fantastic and I csn appreciate why its considered to be a classic!

Great story let down by a mediocre narrator

To be honest I cannot criticise Shelley's skill as a writer. She is amazing and the vivid descriptions bring the story to life. I did however find Victor Frankenstein extremely annoying. I don't know weather this was the point or not but it did somewhat make my experience worse. Personally I thought he was the one entirely at fault and when he self criticised he did it in a way that portrayed himself as tragically innocent. The performance was great if a little slow. I found myself speeding up the recording a bit but it was very well acted and the intonation helped a lot with understanding the language. The first half of the book was quite slow paced for me and it took a while to get into it but then it got more tense and i enjoyed it more. Overall I enjoyed it but it was defiantly quite out of my comfort zone.

Very annoying but well written

Personally found the story to be bland. And the narrators voice isn’t the best for audio books in my opinions kind of ruined it

Not my thing

The performance & volume of the audio is was low and the whisper voice of the speaker throughout made it harder to listen & understand the text of the novel.

Timeless story with average performance
