About this listen

A rollicking novel of crime and punishment set in Texas in the 1920s during the turbulent and often lawless Prohibition and oil boom era. This fast-paced story is full of colorful characters, both good and bad, and violent action.

The story begins in 1900 with the birth of the main character, Frank Hardin. Following his heroic military service with "Black Jack" Pershing in France during the Great War, Frank comes home and takes up the gun and badge, following in the footsteps of his father who was a career lawman.

After the death of his father, Frank heads to a violent Texas oilfield boomtown in a misguided plan to come to the aid of his first girlfriend who is being victimized by a gang of violent criminals who are running the town. After helping to clean up the boomtown, Frank is hired by the Texas Rangers and is sent to the big city where he becomes fixated on solving a series of brutal murders of innocent women. Frank was influenced as a child by the numerous stories his father told of the real-life old west lawmen and outlaws he had met during his long career as a lawman. Frank has similarities to the old west lawmen and outlaws alike and dispenses legal and illegal remedies as the needs arise.
