Summary

From USA Today best-selling author Catherine Bruns comes a delightfully deadly new Cindy York Mystery....

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Words for Cindy York to live by. The struggling real estate agent, full-time mother, and part-time sleuth has been having a tough winter and is desperate for a juicy commission. When she stumbles across a quaint mansion that's "For Sale by Owner", she can hardly believe her luck.

Percy Rodgers is anxious to move and immediately hires Cindy as his agent. But when she shares the exciting news with boss and best bud, Jacques Forte, he tells her that Mr. Rodgers' neighborhood is a dangerous place to play, since the man just served 20 years for murdering his wife. Before Cindy can ax the deal, she stumbles over another dead body inside the house and is swept up in family drama, resentment, and decade-old secrets that someone will kill to keep. If Cindy isn’t careful, this may end up being one deal that really is to die for.

I love him like a brother

Cindy, rea!estate agent with a penchant for investigative trouble, is just about to have her fourth baby. The house sales market was slow because of bad weather and rising prices, and the small agency for which she worked was entering hard times: commissions just didn't seem gone coming their way any more and her boss and read friend Jacques was having relationship problems which left him sad and just a tad helpless. Then, it seemed her much changed. She found an old mansion for sale by the owner and the man was delighted to let Cindy handle everything for him. Unfortunately, the next day the new client was dead. Another case to investigate.

The murder mystery itself is reasonable, well, actually, it's a bit silly, really, especially the denouement. But it is intriguing and filled with angry tension. But it is the ongoing family life of Cindy and Greg, with teenaged daughter and younger twin sons, and the intrusive mother in law, which makes this book so appealing. Add in the new baby and Jacques own domestic difficulties and the story really comes alive. Often funny (see the baby's birth session), this is a well developed character cozy which is warm and exciting as well as easy to read. Narration by Any Deuchler is well done: her reading is expressive well intoned and pleasant on the ear. Each of the.protagonists too is given his or her own voice and, even if she does occasionally struggle to make a character sound fully masculine, she is consistent and that element quickly faces from view. She is, however, excellent at further breathing life into Cindy herself and her boss Jacques. A good performance overall.

This is the third book in the Cindy York series and, whilst it is pleasant to know the background of the main protagonists, there is nothing prevent this story being read as a successful stand alone. Warm and engaging but with a frisson of thrills, this is a great feel good book. My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. Here's hoping author Catherine Bruns devises more house sales for Cindy soon.

So fun to hang with Cindy and Jacques again......

For Sale by Killer is the third entry in this cozy mystery series featuring hapless real estate agent Cindy York. The mystery portion of this book could easily be read as a standalone, but I think that it is much more enjoyable as part of the series. Cindy is pregnant at 44 with her fourth child when she happens upon a man wanting to sell a mansion he inherited from his grandmother. After signing the contract, Cindy finds out from her boss and best friend Jacques that the homeowner was just released from prison after serving a 20 year sentence for murdering his wife. When she goes back to the mansion to break the contract, she finds the homeowner dying from the same type of knife attack from which his wife died.

Even though discovering another dead body sends her into labor a month early, Cindy can't resist investigating again. What follows is a sometimes funny and sometimes frightening series of encounters between Cindy and various suspects. She is joined in her adventures by Jacques and supported at home by her devoted husband Greg with star appearances by her evil mother-in-law, daughters and twin sons. The scene with Cindy and Jacques in the delivery room still has me smiling. If you enjoy a terrific whodunit with a highly engaging main character and delightful interactions with secondary characters, you cannot make a better choice than the Cindy York Mystery Series.

Amy Deuchler narrates all three books in this series, and she is the perfect choice for Cindy's spunky personality. Deuchler's delivery is smooth and flawless, and she adds the perfect level of emotion to every scene. She differentiates well between characters, and I especially enjoy her portrayal of Cindy's shrew of a mother-in-law and slightly snotty teenage daughter.

I received a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for this honest review.

For Sale by Killer

Our favorite Real Estate Agent is back, and once again murder seems to follow her. When Cindy finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation it could end up hitting a little close to home.

Amy Deuchler is back to lend her voice talents to the third book in this series. She always does a marvelous job and this book was no different.

Earns 5/5 Real Estate Contracts…Killer Karma!

I am a big fan of Catherine Bruns's work, and For Sale by Killer is an top-notch entertaining cozy! Cindy York is nearing the end of her pregnancy trying to find a "For Sale by Owner" owner who she can convince to use her professional skills. She finds the perfect property and gets the contracts signed only to be told the owner is an unsuitable, if not dangerous, client having recently been released from prison for murdering his wife. She returns to void the contract finding the owner himself a victim. She's haunted by his final words, “Vanessa. Loved her. I—I couldn’t hurt her, not ever. Her killer—here. Had to shut me…up. Find them…please.”

I highly recommend this third book with vivid descriptions and well-developed characters. The set up was very intriguing with excitement and an “Oh, Wow!” satisfying final solution. Weaving in humorous and thought-provoking dialogue, I’ve always said Catherine uses “karma” as a main force. Although in the owner's case, I had wished for a different result, but if you’re going to reveal a secret someone wants to remain secret, you run the risk of being silenced for good. But my biggest question is…when will the mother-in-law be served up a big dose of karma? She desperately needs it!

For me Catherine Bruns's book is well worth revisiting by listening to the audio version narrated by the talented Amy Deuchler. With her voice artistry, Amy enriches Bruns's already entertaining story performing a delightful tone for the first-person perspective of Cindy York. With a natural hint of baritone, she does very well with the several male voices, a challenge for female narrators. The engaging part is how well Amy portrays the different personalities, solemn and excited emotions, and the humor Cindy's character needs to employ as a mother of a teenager and twin boys and daughter-in-law to a monster-in-law. Excellent. Entertaining. Best way to enjoy Bruns's work.

Another great Cindy York mystery

Cindy York is back again, trying to sell a house that is tainted by tragedy. I've listened to all three books in the series and like the recurring characters and sometimes humorous situations that Catherine Bruns writes into the stories. Amy Deuchler does a great job with the narration.

Looking forward to finding out what happens in the continuing tale of Cindy York.

Murder & Real Estate

Who knew real estate could be so much fun! This is such a fun cozy mystery. I love Cindy's spunk and ability to attract trouble. She's 44 years old and 8 months pregnant at the start of this book and finds herself facing another dead body. She off again to solve another murder since the police aren't interested in investigating the murder of a convicted murder. These books can stand alone but they are fun enough I would recommend reading them all in order. The narrator is top notch and is simply a lot of fun to listen to. If you like the clean cozy mysteries then you'll love this series!
