About this listen

The wages of sin is death.

The partial collapse of a disused Edinburgh church reveals a dead body in the rubble, his head badly smashed by falling masonry. Soon identified as an old ex-con - Kenny Morgan - his death is put down to a heart attack and deemed non-suspicious.

Tony McLean is approached by a notorious crime lord who suggests the police should be looking into Morgan's death more closely. Despite struggling with his recent retirement, he is reluctant to involve himself.

But when a second man is found dead in another disused church, his forehead branded with a cross, this time it is clearly murder.

There's a killer stalking the streets of Edinburgh. Is it time for McLean to get back to doing what he does best?

Brilliant. Super pace, wonderful narration as always- can’t wait for the next in the series!

Great story

This book as have previous books was narrated with perfection. The hint of the supernatural was missing, it's always what's drawn me to the books, so we're many previous characters that we have come to love in this series, that said I did enjoy the book.

Madam Rose

James Oswald is one of the top three authors of crime thrillers in my opinion His descriptive and his characters are the best. His stories, intricately woven. I love that Madame Rose has been bought back too. Narrated by one of the very best Ian Hanmore. For me, a book can be totally ruined by poor narration.

Interesting characters, and a good story

After taking a break last year Inspector McLean returns - and wow.

This book although 13th in a wonderful series can be listened/read as a stand alone but I do thoroughly recommend grabbing the whole series. Some reviews say there should have been more of the detective but the world of Inspector McLean ‘is involving into including more of his colleagues hence James Oswald is giving us more of them and there’s only so many words that can be included in a novel, however we might want to hear more of Rose, Richard et al.
Ian Hanmore once again adds extra warmth and depth to James’ characters in his own unique style - wonderful.

My only complaint, ‘I’ve got to wait till next year for book 14, far to long!’

Exceptional return from a master story teller
