This audiobook is about pleasure. It's also about pain. Most importantly, it's about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We're living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting. The increased numbers, variety and potency are staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation.

For the last fifty years, we have been fighting a losing war on food. We have cut fat, reduced carbs, eliminated sugar, and attempted every conceivable diet only to find that eighty-eight million American adults are prediabetic, more than a hundred million have high blood pressure, and nearly half now qualify as obese. The harder we try to control what we eat, the unhealthier we become. Why?

Story
If you’re struggling with obesity or food addiction, you’ve probably been told that you must deprive yourself of certain foods in order to lose weight. You may have also been convinced by the media and by our culture that if you finally become thin, your life will be better, you’ll be happier, and your suffering will come to an end. The problem is it’s not all about the food. It’s about how food is used to self-soothe, to numb ourselves against the pain of living, or to cope with stress and unresolved emotions.

Story
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse.

Eat less, lose more: a mantra few of us would disagree with and one we’ve heard countless times in official health advice. And yet doctors treating diabetes and obesity are experiencing extraordinary results among patients by taking a different approach - not by counting calories, but by eating a low-carb, high-fat diet. Setting out the case for this ‘ketogenic’ approach to eating, Gary Taubes analyses the bad science behind the nutritional dogma that has brought us to a diabetes and obesity crisis.

That explains a lot!!
Having struggled with my weight for over 40 years and looked for answers everywhere, I can finally say this author has hit the nail on the head. How I wish I'd read this sooner.
Prior to reading this enlightening, well written, informative book, none of the "answers" people were suggesting ever seemed to fit. The closest answer was emotional eating.... But that never seemed quite right. I haven't had any childhood trauma, I wasn't stressed, I didn't eat just because things were not going well that day or I was bored...
I had a full on, never ending, unremitting obsession with food and once I began to eat I couldn't stop. That was my round peg that didn't fit into any of the square holes that were being offered up as the reason for my compulsion to eat.
I started to research neurology for my answers, fascinated by the advances we were making in this field, and wanting to understand how the craving brain actually works. Some of the books talked about the brain's reward system. This sparked instant recognition. This was the root of the issue, I was sure of it.
And then came this book. And every single thing fell into place. Round peg, round hole.
I urge anyone who has struggled with food for years and years, probably feeling that they must be a failure, lacking willpower, weak, or some other incorrect assumption, to read this book.
The solutions offered are not overnight fixes or easy, but simply by understanding what is going on in your brain you have the best possible chance of finally finding peace of mind and taking action knowing for once exactly WHY, and exactly what, you are doing. You can't change what you don't understand. This book explains what's going on, and why you are powerless against the physiological processes that override even the most determined and best of intentions, and how to overcome this dilemma.
I recommend this book without hesitation.

Great book for those that struggle with food
I came across this book while searching on the topic of food. I found the information very useful. The narration is done well with simple language that one can follow via audio format. Sometimes the chapters can be a bit long-winded but not to the extent that they are unpleasant. I found myself identifying with many descriptions from the book and I finished it with eagerness. It has opened up a whole area of exploration for me.
Highly recommended for people who have a dysfunctional relationship with food or other addictions.

Depressing
All you have to do is give up sugar, flour, fat, coffee, sweetener, rye flour, soda, diary, fruit etc etc etc. completely and forevermore, and you will be magically cured! Hallelujah! Oh, and measure and weight absolutely everything, even take a scale along if you go to a restaurant! (to weight your broccoli?)
If this is not obsessive, I don't know what is.

Life Changing Book
This book is life changing. If you are in a mental place where you are ready to accept the author's recommendation of abstinence from trigger foods, it can change your life. The author thoroughly provides evidence, stories and personal experience to help readers address the root of their food issues. The message is honestly tough to hear - give up the "yummy" food FOREVER if you want to be freed from its shackles. I am two weeks in giving up sugar and flour and feel better all ready. Hopeful I can continue. One. Day. At. A. Time. Wonderful read if you are trying to get to the bottom of food issues, whether you are a severe addict, or someone mildly "hooked" like I am.

very disappointed
I have 64 books in my library and never written a negative review until this one. the book is one continues case report.
yes they help you determine if you are a food addict which is good but that is it. basically the only recovery help is to identify trigger foods and to completely obtsain from those foods. certainly that could have been done in 2 or 3 chapters not 19. I hope I can return the book. i got it on the recommendation of chef AJ. I wonder if she read it ?

Great for anyone with any foods issues
I took my time reading this and definitely had to take breaks in between, I finished it between April 2020 and September 2020 because sometimes it's a lot it's overwhelming realizing you've had an issue. I believe that we can create new brain pathways and don't have to be victims of addiction, but this is still inside foot into the addiction I once had.

Excellent resource for food addicts
This book is very comprehensive, Dr. Tarman covers the science very well. Her expertise in the addiction realm and her own history of food addiction are very compelling and offer much insight. She explorers various treatment perspectives and adds personal stories. This book offers hope and a direction, a great next step after acknowledging that I am indeed a food junkie. I will listen again and again. The narrator is pleasant to listen to as well, I highly recommend this book.
