About this listen

Every family has its secrets.

When Kyle Wells and his friends take an annual trip to his family’s cabin deep in the Rocky Mountains, a string of events unravel to expose what his family has kept hidden for decades. As an unexpected blizzard pounds the mountains, a friend begins to act different and seems a bit off after a strange encounter in the woods. Mysterious beings known as Exalls follow them back to the city where further chaos erupts.

Finding himself in the midst of a battle against evil, Kyle learns of a disturbing truth kept secret by his own grandmother, Susan. He and his close circle of friends turn to her as their last hope of survival.

Followed You Home is a strange book. Part horror, part Men in Black science fiction, it feels more like an introduction to a new series than a stand alone novel.
A small group of friends are camping out in a blizzard when one of them goes missing. He is found injured having been attacked by someone, or something, in the woods. A quick retreat to the local hospital reveals that not everyone is as they have seemed to be and all their lives are in danger, in particular, the grandmother of one of the boys.

The excitement, the fear, is palpable. But although the book builds to a climax, the ending feels as if it has come too soon and not been resolved. Each protagonist is individually introduced with background extensively given, having their own chapters slotted in between action sequences. There is very little actual story. This rather curious approach gives it the feeling of the start of a series. It would certainly be interesting to see how it developed, if another 30 years has to pass before the story can continue.
Scott R Smith delivers a good, well modulated reading which clearly identifies the different characters and keeps the narrative tight and exciting. His is a pleasant voice to hear, clear, with good intonation and, for this reader, he certainly added to the overall enjoyment of the book.

As mentioned previously, this book feels unfinished despite the definite ending. It is S.F. in that aliens are involved but more horror story than anything else. And, where that aspect occurs, powerfully written. Many good things individually; but together? ... Well, somehow, I was expecting more.

You kill each other. You kill your planet.

This book was a little strange, but in a good way, and leaves you wanting more! The descriptive work in it is excellent, really making you feel like you're experiencing the events in the story (no matter how icky that may be!) and if, like me, you listen to the audiobook, the storytelling talents of Scott R. Smith really bring the whole story to life. I found myself snapping back to reality with my hands in a bowl of cold washing up water after being so caught up in the story I'd completely zoned out for nearly an hour! So whilst I'd highly recommend this book, don't listen to the audiobook whilst driving or operating heavy machinery!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

Don't listen to this one whilst driving or operating heavy machinery!
