About this listen

The first original novel tying into the critically acclaimed and much-missed Firefly series from creator Joss Whedon

The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true....

While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war. As the rest of the crew struggle to locate him, Mal is placed on trial for his life, fighting compelling evidence that someone did indeed betray them to the Alliance all those years ago. As old comrades and old rivals crawl out of the woodwork, Mal must prove his innocence, but his captors are desperate and destitute, and will settle for nothing less than the culprit’s blood.

River is a more sympathetic character than in the series, movies and comics (not to detract from Ms. Glau’s mesmerising performance). This is part in due to the narrator as well as the excellent writing. He has a superb vocal range and does a good job of capturing the various nuances given to the characters by the actors.
Mr Lovegrove also does a superb job of recapturing the charm of the series scripts and has made a ‘shiny’ example of a personal favourite. The story itself could have been plucked straight from potential ideas for future episodes.

Sticking the landing.

I didn't like this to start with but after 3-4 hours it picked up a bit and the last few hours were decently compelling.

It does have some problems: To many similies, many of which referenced Earth-That-Was. It was written more like a tv show with audio description than a book, just little things that were described too much or too often. The characters seemed a bit unlike the TV series especially Jayne and River.

On the other hand it was quite fun. The story wasn't bad and it built up quite well over the course of the novel. It did feel like a story in the Firefly verse and it was nice to have a story with these characters in again.

The narration was ok. I struggled quite a bit with the characters' voices sounding absolutely nothing like the TV series but I got over it eventually.

This was a decent bit of fanfiction.
