When a viral apocalypse kills 97 percent of the people on the planet, the survivors' humanity is hanging by a thread. Amid the leftovers of civilization, ex-Army Ranger Jason Larsen is reminded of the meaning of hope, family, and loyalty by a dog and a young boy who are as alone as he is. The survivors he seems to collect become family, and that is very bad news for those who think they run the apocalypse.

Summary
Something merciless watches over the outbreak - guiding its course.
Having narrowly survived the Kill Box, Hot Zone's hardened survivors and their Kill Box allies separate to pursue different objectives - outside of the Indianapolis quarantine zone.
For David Olson, that means bringing his son south to the safe haven of his parents' home - far away from the infected cities. Eric Larsen takes him up on the offer to rest and heal at the house before departing on the long journey to find his family in Colorado.
For Rich and his secretive black ops team, that means transporting Dr. Chang and Dr. Hale to a secure facility out east, where they will join the nation's few surviving bio-weapons researchers - with the hopes of pinpointing the source of the virus and possibly developing a vaccine.
Neither group will get very far before the true face of the evil controlling the Zulu Virus arrives - tempting them with irresistible opportunities.
Dangerous opportunities, with the potential to sweep them right into a lethal firestorm.

A zombie book without a Zombie
This second installment not only lacked a debut from the infected it tried very unsuccessfully to be a military thriller.

good conclusion of the story
the story moved along. It was a good lesson. A little light on plot. And the author never really goes into the Big Evil that's behind it all. several times it felt like I skipped over a book.

Konkoly does it again!
There's just enough jargon to satisfy those looking for specs, but he also keeps the story popping along. His characters are not cartoonist, they're people you might know, with flaws and strengths. Love this book!

Did I miss something?
Don’t get me wrong, I liked the series as a whole, but I have several issues with this pseudo-concluded third volume. The ending was rushed, characters were bum-rushed to safety, the wife was in & out of the picture, was accountability for the virus exacted (?), and I still don’t know the motive(s) and/or purpose of the virus. I note so many five star reviews yet scarcely anyone has an issue. What did I miss?
The third book focuses on our boys heading up a convoy to move materials and supplies from one city to another. They’re also called upon to evacuate troops from a besieged headquarters about to be overrun. The story was tense and exciting; full of action from start to finish. The same characters were brought forward; we got to know them and care about them. R.C. Bray was excellent; it was a joy listening to him. Except for my criticism, recommended reading.

Conclusion to the Trilogy
This book is on par with the others, as far as action, storyline, etc. Though it had somewhat of a "Star Trek" ending, it was good up until the last chapter, which was a little sappy and overly predictable. It sounded like the editors made the author write it in at the last minute.
A better ending would have have David, Larson and a few others sitting around, drinking, and talking about what the fallout was. This could have tied up a bunch of loose ends and would have been a nicer way to find out the ongoing outcome and fallout, how the country was rebuilding, etc. If done right, it could have opened up the possibility for another series with the same main characters.
