In this first novel from Canadian author Karen Rivers, who is now perhaps better known for her extensive young adult titles, a love affair between a youthful woman and a much older, married man plays out fully and lyrically in a landscape much like Rivers’ native Victoria.
Nicole Poole’s thoughtful, sensitive, and mature performance conveys the poetry of the audiobook’s omniscient voice. All three main characters, though just referred to as the girl, the man, and the wife, feel deeply personalized under her capable vocals. Poole is an acclaimed audio actress, having won both the AudioFile Earphones and the Publisher’s Weekly Listen Up Awards. She has also been an Audie Award Finalist.
Summary
This first novel takes us on a journey through the centre of an explosive, illicit relationship that drives into the fragile heart of a family. A young girl and an older man succumb to an incendiary love affair at an unpayable price. As lies are revealed, the characters must pick up the fragments of whom they thought they were and turn towards an awareness of whom they have now become. They must explore the truth of love and the cost of passion.
