Summary

A coming-of-age debut audiobook from accomplished actor, director, and writer Sean Patrick Flanery explores that powerful first taste of love that sets the bar for something that we'll chase, usually unsuccessfully, for the rest of our lives.

A young Mickey navigates through the dense Texas humidity of the '70s and out onto the porch every single time his granddaddy calls him, where he's presented with the heirloom recipe for life, love, and manhood. But all the logic and insight in the world cannot prepare him to operate correctly in the presence of a wonderfully beautiful little girl who moves in just behind his rear fence. How will this magical moment divide Mickey's life into a before and after and permanently change his motion, directing it down the unpaved road to which only a lucky few are granted access?

Best heartfelt book

I found this book to be outstanding and breath taking, a must buy for those that like mushy stuff with all the hard parts that make it real. And the narrative by Sean Patrick Flanery was amazing you could feel the emotion in every word.

A masterpiece in writing and narration

Jane Two enters every single fibre of your being und you never want to let it go! This gem pulls you in right from the beginning.
It was a very emotional experience listening to the author himself. Absolutely brilliant how Sean Patrick Flanery gives every single person a different voice. You will smile, laugh out loud and fascinated listen to Grandaddy’s wise messages. Be prepared: the grief in Sean’s voice will tear you apart.
Sean Patrick Flanery has an outstanding mastery of words and imagery. Jane Two is about life, learning from the mistakes you make, regret, becoming a man and a life changing love.
After reading and hearing this novel, you desperately need more! And you only want to listen to his voice!

Life - Raw, Honest, Heartfelt

I can’t remember how this book came onto my radar. The publisher’s summary sounds somewhat bland, but it really doesn’t do justice to this wonderful story. I took a chance based on the nearly perfect ratings by others who have read it. Then I did something I have never done before - I immediately listened to it again.

Calling this a coming-of-age story of first love is true, but just not enough. And yet to go too deeply into the details would force spoilers that just shouldn’t be done. It's the emotional connection to the all of the characters that makes this so special. I’m going way out on a literary limb here to say that the feeling I got for Mickey’s journey of discovery felt similar to how I felt about Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m not saying the stories are the same – Jane Two does not have the large social conflict of Mockingbird. But the way Mickey perceived his world and his place in it, guided by his Granddaddy – a colorfully profane Cajun version of Atticus Finch – achieved a truthfulness that made you live Mickey’s life with him, to want the things he wanted and to learn the lessons he had to learn.

I really encourage you to give this book a chance, with one caveat. If you are generally put off by strong language to the point that it can ruin a read for you, then pass this by. Granddaddy’s lessons are taught with blistering profanity, but always with the caution “This is man’s talk. You don’t talk like that to the women”. In his own way he’s just as much of a gentleman as Atticus.

Jane Two

I loved this book. Was hooked quickly by both Sean Patrick Flanery's writing as well as his narration. The story of childhood crushes, knowledge gained in unlikely places, and the realization that love is not something only realized in adulthood though it may take time for both parties to get on the same page.

This coming-of-age story made me laugh, think about life, and by the end had me beginning to tear up. Well done on your first book Mr. Flanery, well done. Shine on.

Best book I've read in a while

This book is just good for the soul. It makes you rethink your own values and and long for society to do the same. It is a love story intertwined with a coming of age story.

Profanity Exemption

A truly beautiful story of time well wasted. SPF is a unicorn himself. Normally excess profanity would bother me but having met Sean before I appreciated how he meticulously crafted each phrase of the tragic journey through Mickey's life like I had witnessed it myself. A PE is needed for this, but I guarantee you will not regret it.

DELIVERS ON SO MANY LEVELS! A STORY WE CAN ALL RELATE TO.

This captured my heart from the beginning. Sean Patrick Flanery narrates this story as if you were there, seeing and feeling what he does. Set in Texas the story is one of family and relationships, and those awkward youthful moments in life. The moment that you find love, the love that impacts your life.
Many moments that will resonate with anyone growing up. Lots of times to burst out laughing with how he recants moments, and others so touching at monumental events throughout life. He describes his "love of his life" all the way through the book, as does he describe the life lessons his Grandaddy try to instil into him. It makes you think how you can apply his lessons to your own life. Beautifully narrated in his own unique way, it leaves an imprint on your soul.
Can so easily see this book made for the big screen.
Undoubtedly one of the best books - I hope this is not the last we hear from Sean Patrick Flanery.

Jane Two is a masterpiece...

...it throws you from laughter to the ground crying like a baby within seconds.
The story is about the one and only love only one can describe that intensely, that found it once in his life. It's about growing up, family, wisdom, friendship, regret and most of all LOVE. The fact that it is autobiographical and narrated by the author Sean Patrick Flanery himself makes it so special...you can hear and feel EVERY single emotion in his voice while listening...I felt Mickeys anger, his fear, the happy moments made me smile and the sad ones nearly broke my heart and left me crying...Flanery is able to paint pictures that powerful and strong, you can see the story developing before your inner eyes...every single character becomes your friend, your teacher or your enemy like a real person while reading!! And than there's Jane...the girl this novel is all about...she is described with the most beautiful pictures I've ever read/heard!!
If you think, you would enjoy an emotional, deep and wise journey through Texas and childhood memories and if you are someone, who never lost faith in love...YOU'LL JUST LOVE THIS NOVEL!! Sean Patrick Flanery is one of a kind and you can feel in every word, how important "Jane Two" is to him...how much of his heart and soul he put in writing and narrating this story...DON'T MISS OUT!!

Oh, did it bring back memories of lost chances!

Maybe a bit of a spoiler but I need to say it. If you hate spoilers, do not read this.

Although I enjoyed the listen, there was something about it that nagged at me and I didn't know what. Then, I realized it brought back very uneasy and regretful memories of my high school crush and the similar inability for us to make any meaningful contact with one another due to shyness and what now seems like just plain stupidity. (For many years afterward, it felt like a stab in the heart.)

Flannery captures these ever intense years through the eyes and voice of a high school boy, who similarly let the chance of knowing and enjoying the girl of his dreams slip through his hands. It is a lovely, intense, bittersweet story and is very engrossing.

The author does his own narration wonderfully. It is a good book for those of us who are brave enough to wander back in time and stir up those long forgotten, sometimes painful memories.

A must for everyone

I decided to listen to Jane Two because I am a fan of Sean Patrick Flannery. What I found in this book is a truly inspirational and moving story. Having Sean read the book brings it to life in a way few audiobooks have for me. The emotion and feeling that pours out is more like a heart's cry than a story.

I would honestly recommend this book to everyone with one exception. If you shy away from cursing or language, you might be distracted and not able to immerse yourself in the story. However, I hope you can put that aside so you can enjoy this wonderful story!
