I think this book would have benefited from a slightly toned down narrator. There were a few times during the book that the characters sing or make guttural noises (mostly during exorcism...) and it was really off-putting to hear the narrator actually sing really loudly. Whilst other times she was too quiet so there's wasn't a good balance really.
Apart from that I enjoyed the story and the 80's references. Really felt like The Exorcist meets Stranger Things so if you enjoy those you'll love this. But maybe buy the book instead....

Not a masterpiece by any means but good, entertaining and only occasionally tiresome. And a good old fashioned story too. This is more than I have been able to say for a great many serious novels this year. I won’t mention them.

I really enjoyed this! I will say that I don't think it's exceptional and I've certainly read better horror, but it was a pleasant listen. The characters and plot are both nuanced and well written, and despite what others say i actually quite liked the narrators performance. It isn't necessarily scary but would possibly be a good book for someone who is more into standard fiction w occult themes

I was so eager to read this book. I got the audio version for free so was so happy to finally read/hear this. Because of the reviews I was expecting a really scary read but was rather disappointed. I'm glad I had the audio version because if I had read this myself I think I would have put it down and struggled to come back to it at times. I was just wanting something scary to happen but it took a long time for something demonic to make a presence. Maybe I was expecting too much horror or whether the person reading it just wasn't creating as much of an atmosphere as I would have reading it myself.
