About this listen

A heartwarming story of friendship and demonic possession.

The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since the fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby.

Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries - and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend's Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse-pounding supernatural thriller.

If you like dark humour, creepy set ups and lots of retro kitsch then this is the book for you! The only thing letting it down is the very poor narrator. I think it needed a much smarter, savvier and subtle reader.

Fun story, terrible narrator

I had no idea what to expect with this one, it was recommended to me and I didn’t even read up on the book at all. I went in blind and I was NOT disappointed.

Nostalgia, teen drama, life, vulnerability, friendships, longevity, fear, darkness - this one has it all. It is so well written and so nicely paced that even the more out there idea of exorcism has a strong base in reality that sent me on a personal journey of an armchair psychiatrist in trying to figure out what was going on and why. Where could the story possibly go?

I won’t get too much into the book itself but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend giving it a go. This would rank very high in my list of favourite listens this year.

Emily did a fantastic job in her performance in this book. She got stuck into bringing each character to life, she gave emotion and applied all the subtle context of the characters through her voice. It was a wonderful performance and Emily definitely added positively to the experience of Grady’s writing.

Loved it.
