What if the video game Civilization was real?

Bestlethrone is attacked and doomed to fall. Now Prince Felan must flee, leaving his family behind in a desperate attempt to save his father’s kingdom against known forces and the influence of the gods who may be moving against them. Felan’s Rescue blends medieval fantasy into a sprawling space opera set immediately after years of intergalactic war, taking the reader to a galaxy spanning civilization, populated by alien races, trying to recover from the devastation of the last thousand years of war.

Listener received this title free

It took me until the start of book 2 to actually figure out what was going on. Book 1 was very wordy and would benefit from a good edit, easily losing about half the book. When it did start go get going in book 2 the pace increased and it became a good interesting read. The story however reminded me of Iain M Banks' Matter - a similar theme, but unfortunately not in the same league as Banks' mindblowing epic. Then at the end, the climax rather fizzled out leaving many threads hanging, which I assume will be taken up in a subsequent book. The narration was excellent, using many character voices to distinguish between speakers. A decent enough listen if you can get past the first half.
