A reasanbly good yarn, not very well read
- By George on 27-07-14
Summary
Three men uncover a plot to launch nuclear weapons at China's port cities in this heart-pounding military thriller from New York Times best-selling author Larry Bond.
Jerry Mitchell, skipper of the USS North Dakota, receives a message from Girish Samant, a submarine captain and former enemy of his, requesting a meeting. That meeting revives memories of a submarine he'd served on many years ago and a mission that proved far more dangerous and important than he had expected.
Girish once tried to kill Jerry, but now he and Aleksey Petrov, a former Russian sub captain, need the American's help to uncover a terrible truth: Nuclear relics of the fallen Soviet Empire are being sold to people more than willing to use them. A group of Indian nationalists are plotting to cripple China's economy with the bootleg nuclear weapons. Jerry and his comrades must stop the cabal's plan before they trigger an Asian nuclear war.

Good story but needed more Jerry
The story line was great but much less time on board subs as in previous Jerry Mitchell books. Still a solid novel and as always Dick Hill is amazing narrating.

A good series until....
What did you like best about Fatal Thunder? What did you like least?
Just about the only good thing I can say about Fatal Thunder is that it closes the book on the main adversary, Admiral Khirochenko (spelling eludes me sorry), from the first book in the Jerry Mitchell series. Other than that, there's really no good things about this book. This is a book that had a pretty decent premise: nukes gone missing with one showing up in Kashmir when it detonates. However, this is almost an afterthought. It seems like, without ANY investigation, this detonation is simply Pakistani terrorists being careless. Sorry for the spoiler, but that's the entirety of that plot line. I just removed some dialogue. This book is SO contrived that it becomes so hard to believe as to become nearly unreadable at times. The best part of the previous three books was that, though there were still contrived aspects to the stories, they almost seemed plausible. In this book, they don't even try. For example, Petrov is being hunted down by an ex-Spetznaz assassin and defeats him through the use of an armored vest and simply tripping over his own two feet! Oh, and the main protagonist in this book ISN'T JERRY MITCHELL! In fact, his only role in the first 75% of the story is as an intelligence agent interviewing an Indian Sub Captain in San Diego, CA! Uh..... contrived. There are MANY other examples. Needless to say, if this review helps you decide to end the Jerry Mitchell series before reading Fatal Thunder, then consider this review useful.
Has Fatal Thunder turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. but if there was another book after this in the Jerry Mitchell series, I would more than likely abandon the series.
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Mr. HIll does an overall decent job on the story. However, especially early on, his drawl was often seemingly slurred together. It seemed like he sounded either stuffed up with a cold, hung over, or just came back from the Dentist having had his tongue numbed.
Was Fatal Thunder worth the listening time?
I'd argue that it probably was, based solely on the fact that had I read the text version I probably wouldn't have finished the book. That being said, I kept on thinking that, because of jumps in the timeline as read on the Audible file, it seemed like the book was abridged in some ways. Since this isn't abridged in the detailed information, I can only assume that this is due to poor editting by the publisher.
Any additional comments?
Larry Bond is usually a far better author than what came out in Fatal Thunder. The first four books in this series, though a bit choppy in terms of timeline and somewhat contrived at times, was a far better read than this book. In the forward, Larry stated that he was talked into writing this book (or at least that's what he suggested). I hope Larry isn't gullible the next time he feels the urge. It was a sad ending to a good protagonist's timeline.

Submarine Strategy at its’ best
Larry Bond delivered another great novel with known and well developed characters from previous novels. Great story line in that it was easily believable in this day and age of tensions between nations.
The only thing that I didn’t like - I always like the novels to be longer! I guess I’ll just have to get another Larry Bond novel to feed my addiction!
One last thing, Dick Hill has the most amazing voice! He makes me feel like like I’m a fly on the wall. His voice is pure butter - smooth and rich!
This novel is definitely worth your time.

Not as good as other books in this series
Would you try another book from Larry Bond and/or Dick Hill?
I have been a big fan of Larry Bond and the Jerry Mitchell series for many years. I found this book, Fatal Thunder to not meet the standards set by the other books in this series. The story starts with a nuclear bomb detonation but has little jeopardy for our hero as most of the action takes place in India. The United States comes off looking all knowing and in a positive light but much of the action is plodding and predictable.
