Summary

Fast Forward is a thought-provoking and gripping autobiography about Andrew Cole's determination to succeed against all the odds.

Misconceptions have stalked Andrew Cole like a hatchet-man defender determined to cut him down to size. In the world of modern-day football, his reserved demeanour was often interpreted as surly intransigence. Alongside an aptitude for goalscoring, it was widely believed, ran an attitude problem. In Fast Forward, a candid and inspirational autobiography, Cole finally presents his side of the story.

The son of a Windrush-generation Jamaican miner from a humble background in Nottingham, he was viewed as a one-man awkward squad by George Graham and Jimmy Hill before Kevin Keegan identified him as the man to bring goals to Newcastle.

However, only when Alex Ferguson, his 'second father', took him to Manchester United did Cole begin to belie his image, amassing goals, medals and England caps. Two decades on from United's historic Treble, he reveals the inside track on Eric Cantona and David Beckham, Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After a career spent challenging assumptions and adversity, he had to summon fresh reserves of resilience to battle illness and depression.

A real insight of Andrew Cole

This autobiography really opens up the door to understanding and getting to know this troubled but determined footballer, with introverted character. There is a brutal honesty to his insight, whether this is football, family or politics, which is respected. Great to break down those misconceptions. Great respect paid to those who nurtured such a talented footballer. The real insight is to the suffering of his condition over the past 5 years. All the best Coley

The Highs and Lows

Jim Byrne

A successful career described very well. I was full of sympathy for his health battles. Fantastic football player but also sounds like a very humble genuine guy.
Enjoyed this. Good narration

Hmmm

Torn on this. Clearly an outstanding footballer but a reluctance to acknowledge and accept his attitude problem. Would like to hear some of the other sides to the arguments he had with managers, the one sided accounts gave the impression that despite his talent he was a self indulgent, selfish and arrogant troublemaker

Good book, poor narration

Would i recommend this book? Yes.
Is it ad gripping as youd expect? No.

A good book with a dive in to the career of Andy Cole - sorry, Andrew Cole.
He doesn't come across very well in the beginning, but there was some great insights.

A big theme ariund attitude, application in training and a poor england cap return from a guy that had scored over 40 goals in a single season.

I gained more respect for him by the end and some great personal insights.
I felt it was a bit light in some areas, but a good book to get stuck in to over xmas.

The narrator is as poor as people say, but if you can get passed it, then it is a good read.

Andrew keeps it so real.

Honest and touching, story about football glory and personal struggle. A proper human being. Not afraid to show you who he is.
