About this listen

January 1901, the day after Queen Victoria's death, two families visit neighouring graves in a London cemetery. The Waterhouses revere the late Queen and cling to Victorian traditions; the Colemans look forward to a more modern society. To their mutual distaste, however, the families are inextricably linked when their daughters become friends behind the tombstones. I have loved some of her other books on Audible but this was so slow to get going I almost gave up on it. The narrative in the form of first-person speech by the two little girls felt irritating. However aout halfway through it became more engaging. It was clearly well researched and an interesting record of the post-Victorian era.

Eve Matteson brings dimension and credibility to the characters, be they male or female.
Her accents are versatile and accurate. I especially appreciated the north London accent, which was bang on, no hint of charicature.
The story is one of ordinary middle class and working class folk, whose lives are so different but yet, in crucial difficult times, so alike. Involving politics, friendships, family, marriage and childhood along with the societal expectations of the time, this story vividly creates the atmosphere of a London life at the beginning of the last century.

I read this years ago. Had forgotten it. So much better read by Eve Matheson. Couldn’t turn it off!

Loved it!!

Good solid Tracey C. Not her best, but thoroughly enjoyable. No unnecessary drama or twist’s just solid writing

It was a little difficult to get into this story to start with due to the multiple characters speaking in the first person. The narrator did a great job of differentiating them but it was a confusing beginning. As time passed and the characterisation was clearer the story became more involving as it moved from the death of Queen Victoria to the death of Edward VII with lives and characters changing in large ways and small. By the end I was sorry to leave the story and wanted to know what happened next to some of the people I'd spent time with.

Slow start, strong finish
