Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES Music Book of the Year

Faith, Hope and Carnage is a meditation on faith, art, music, freedom, grief and love.

Created from more than forty hours of intimate conversations with the journalist Seán O’Hagan, it is a profoundly thoughtful exploration, in Cave’s own words, of what really drives his life and creativity. The audiobook has been recorded so that the listener, especially when playing through headphones, sits between Cave and O’Hagan.

The book draws candidly on Cave’s life, from his early childhood to the present day, his loves, his work ethic and his dramatic transformation in recent years. The audiobook features 16 musical codas and elements from the Carnage, Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen albums. It also includes an exclusive, additional 12-minute conversation between Cave and O’Hagan about the production of the recording.

Faith, Hope and Carnage offers ladders of hope and inspiration from a true creative visionary.

A Snapshot Of An Artist

Really fantastic book. Despite the often very heavy subject matter it comes across like a podcast between two friends. One recorded late into the night in which discussions get very deep. We hear Nick’s views on art, hope, grief, faith, the present (and a little bit about the past). At times these views evolve over the course of the interviews. I’d suggest his last 3 albums, Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen and Carnage are required listening to get the most out of it as he explains the mindset behind these and the Red Hand Files website.
I’d also warn that if you’re someone who is easily upset that an artist is a real person with real flaws and opinions that may not match your own, its probably safest to stay away as Nick has some strong views on some hot topics at times. I loved it all, well done Seán for knowing when to sit back and when to push.

Work of mysterious beauty

Incredibly insightful conversation about seemingly common yet uncannily mysterious aspects of everyone's life.

I couldn't stop listening, one of those books that I fear finnishing right after reading the first few pages. I loved setting aside time in the night when everyone got to bed and I had uninterrupted time to listen to this gem while sitting on the balcony in Barcelona during warm October.

Thank you Nick Cave and Seán O'Hagan. Unforgettable.

Incredible Book - Absorbing and Emotional

Truly absorbing and emotional experience. The dynamic of the q&a style really works and the follow up on certain comments help the understanding greatly. The music at the end of each chapter also works really well. It changes the listening experience of both Ghosteen and Skeleton Tree but not in a negative sense.

Be Amazed and Question EVERYTHING

An insightful and refreshing book of conversations. It made me question and rethink a lot of things regarding my knowledge of Nick Cave ( limited knowledge I have come to realise ) my views of things regarding faith and grief and most importantly how many journeys and pathways there really are within the world of creativity of any kind.
I listened to this as I didn’t want my new hard backed and signed copy to get ruined while I took it with my on my travels.
I am happy to say this was my first ever Audible book. I made the perfect choice!

Riveting

Wonderful book. I enjoyed every word of it. The themes covered are all at once the most ethereal and the most personal concepts that we as humans grapple with. Grief, meaning, love, faith, creation

Incredible book, even if you’re not into Nick Cave music

Loved every second of this book. A hugely compassionate account of creativity, love, faith and the incredibly sad loss of Arthur.

Unlike any other book I know of

Excellent. Philosophy and insight, from both sides, probably important for many. A wonderful companion to Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen and Carnage.
