About this listen

A chilling and dark fantasy from bestselling author Raymond E. Feist.

Successful screenwriter Phil Hastings decides to move his family from sunny California to a ramshackle farmhouse in New York State. The idea is to take some time out, relax and pick up the threads of his career as a novelist.

Good plan, bad choice. The place they choose is surrounded by ancient woodland. The house they choose is the centrepoint of a centuries-old evil intent on making its presence felt to intruders.

I read this book when it came out and wished it would make it in to an audible version. I wish now they hadn't bothered! Such a terrible crime to do this to such a great book. I only finished it because the story itself was worth it! Any chance you could try it again with a better narrator and production team? Such a missed opportunity!

Shame about the performance!

Great story. Has it all. Fantasy, reality, love, sex and death. Read very well giving characters real personalities. The story itself is very entertaining. The rift war stories are my favourite but Feist does a good job crossing over to semi-reality in my opinion.

Very good. Immersive

If you are a fan of Raymond E Feist, as I am, you need to step away from all his other work and treat this as a complete stand alone story. It is nothing like any of his other works.

The first time I listened to this book I had just listened to most of the Riftwar Cycle work, so I had Peter Joyce’s voice in my head, I didn’t give Tim Flavin much of a chance. I needed to remember that Faerie Tale is set in America, and it needed an American voice to bring it to life.

I’ve since listened to this book regularly, usually as a way for me to reset between epic stories of five books or more, it’s grown on me over time.

It’s definitely a faerie tale for adults and older children. It first came out in 1989, I was still a teenager and I read it avidly before getting family and friends to read it. It’s a supernatural thriller, with a big hint of horror. There is a great deal of magic, based on the Celtic as well as The Wild Hunt.

In current times you may find the idyllic lifestyle of the “all American family” a little cheesy, but get past that, it’s worth it in the end.

It still niggles me, that the editing of the narration isn’t as smooth as it should be, some weird long pauses, like someone forgot to get going again, so it doesn’t flow as well as it should and the build up towards the end isn’t as powerful, in my opinion, as it could be.

A captivating story that was poorly narrated. The accents were horrendous and detracted from the great story being told. Such a shame.

Captivating but cringy
