Jess first meets Josh at their Ivy League college. He is an entitled white guy in chinos, ready to inherit the world. She is almost always the only Black woman in their class. And she’s not expecting to inherit anything.

After graduation, Jess and Josh end up working at the same bank. They share lunch, they share sparring matches, they share ambitions. And suddenly they’re sleeping together . . .

Cecilia Rabess' Everything's Fine is hilarious, heartbreaking and impossible to put down.

We need more stories like this

Those in the corporate world could do with reading this to build empathy for black women’s experiences in the workplace. I liked this book, though Jess seems to have to sacrifice a lot, and Josh gets away with not having to learn anything or become much of an ally in my view. The last line of this book was perfect.

A fabulous read .

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend ! The subject matter is interesting and author is balanced in the way in which she presents the different perspectives, views and politics of the two main characters. The narrator was excellent .

LOVED THIS BOOK

Sometimes there are books that you mourn when you finish the final chapter and this is one of them. I found myself going back to my favourite moments.

Jess is certainly a flawed and real character incredibly infuriating at times, loveable, admirable and a character that draws empathy from the reader.

Josh, although quirky and cute, personifies a structure/system that makes eloquent, rational statements or proposals to counter or nullify the experiences of oppression, discrimination, sidelining, victimisation etc. I think this is now called Gas Lighting?

Despite this, the characters are definitely multi faceted and the reader is drawn to both perspectives.

Although Jess really is trying to figure herself out, I think Josh does more acquiescing than true understanding or self exploration. He never comprehends or admits that his connections/ network was more instrumental to his career advancement than his intellect. He existed in a world of nepotism not meritocracy but remained ignorantly blind to this.

This is a beautifully written novel, great character development, and it does not preach, but merely explores the dynamics in a very clever and engaging way.

Also beautifully read which allowed the characters to come alive.

This book grabbed me just like Americanah did.

Experience before you judge

This book has caused some controversy.

It is making a statement - an important one. The way in which tensions around diversity, career, social class intertwine in multiple ways is realistic.

Such a modern book. Very well read. Enjoyable way to up your game in making the world inclusive with less judgment.

Love the way she says - the college party looked like an Abercrombie ad. Or - Should I have come in my cotton picking best - to the Southern themed party.

Should be compulsory reading for diversity training. Way more effective than traditional training.

Thank goodness for the ability to speed up getting to the end

Boring.
Perfect Jess can do no wrong. She's smart and she knows it and she will include any finance or mathematical term until it becomes buzz word bingo for the first half of the book. Bravo.

She's needy and jealous and gaslights her boyfriend Josh whenever possible so not a very nice person overall.

It would have been nice if there was some depth to any of the other characters. Josh. The Wine Girls who she apparently is friends with but the author can't be bothered for the reader to get to know.

Is it possible to get a credit refund from audible?
