Summary

‘This book is here to take you inside the daily realities of Westminster. I don’t mean that it’s going to bore you to death with a blow by blow account of what it’s like to sit on the Statutory Instrument Debate on Naval regulations 1968-2020 - but to demystify the places and practice of politics.’

From agonising decisions on foreign air strikes to making headlines about orgasms, from sitting in on history-making moments at the UN to eating McCain potato smiles at a black-tie banquet in China, the life of a politician is never dull. And it’s also never been more important. But politics is far bigger than Westminster, and in this book, Jess Phillips makes the compelling case for why now, more than ever, we all need to be a part of it.

With trademark humour and honesty, Jess Phillips lifts the lid on what a career in politics is really like and why it matters - to all of us. This is the inside story of what’s really going on.

Does what it says on the tin, well.

Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and was surprised at how much I also enjoyed the narration as usually I’m not a fan of authors reading their own work. This is a clear, balanced but personal view, one person's take on the workings of our political system mostly within Westminster, which resonated for me and which will no doubt grate for others. I was moved to write a review after finding only the single one star review on Amazon for the Kindle/hard copy version. One star because of the reviewer's biased perceptions of the author and with no reference to content. Nuff said.

Everyone should listen to/read this book!

Hugely enjoyed listening to this and have recommended it to friends and colleagues already. It made me laugh as well as making me feel much more informed about what goes on in Westminster and that my voice matters in it all.

Accessible, informative and inspiring.

Jess Phillips provides her own revealing view of Westminster politics in such an accessible fashion that perhaps this book should be read or listened to by anyone with even a fleeting interest in the politics that impacts on all our lives, irrespective of the colour of the rosette your favoured parliamentary candidate. Written with humour, this book is informative, illuminating and honest.

Deliciously droll

Really enjoyed Jess’s wry, funny and also very touching account of what it is to be a female Labour MP. She has a great turn of phrase and isn’t afraid to name names.. not that you don’t recognise who she is referring to! Interesting, eye opening and honest. She’s got my vote for PM if her time comes.

Really engaging informative and entertaining

I loved this audiobook I learnt so much about the day-to-day life of an MP and it was really helpful to have explained the idiosyncrasies of processes in our political system. JESSis a remarkable woman and very relatable and her heart is in the right place I am thankful she exists.

It's harder than it looks

As someone fairly engaged in Politics I still found this book very interesting. If you've never been bothered about why politics and the politicians we elect matter I recommend this book as an excellent introduction to why you should be. The humanity and basic decency of the author is on full view and if we had a few more MPs like Ms Phillips the country and certainly her party would be in a much better place.

Great Down to Earth

I learnt a lot about Parliament and can now see why it's relevant. I also think you could wheel Jess out anywhere and she would make people sit up and listen

Insightful and engaging

I really enjoyed this audiobook. I’ve always liked Jess Phillips and I like and respect her even more now.
This book gives an insight into the procedures and bureaucracy involved in local, national and international politics.
