Questo romanzo in versi, scritto da Pushkin tra il 1822 e il 1831, fu pubblicato nel 1833. Gli ultimi versi, scritti col tono di chi ha ormai vissuto molto ed è ormai vecchio (e in quel momento l'autore aveva 32 anni) sembrano forieri della morte precoce dell'artista.

Nell'opera l'autore deplora l'assurdità dei duelli che troncano per delle sciocchezze una vita in fiore, a volte per mano degli stessi amici. Di fatto l'autore morì egli stesso in un duello a 38 anni. Nell'opera si racconta lo spirito russo più profondo nell'amore per la natura, per le sue tradizioni, ma anche si dipinge con ironia l'attaccamento ai vuoti formalismi della vita sociale.
