About this listen

Mike Engleby says things that others dare not even think. When the story opens in the 1970s, he is a university student, having survived a "traditional" school. A man devoid of scruple or self-pity, Engleby provides a disarmingly frank account of English education. Yet, beneath the disturbing surface of his observations lies an unfolding mystery of gripping power.

One of his contemporaries unaccountably disappears, and as we follow Engleby's career, which brings us up to the present day, the listener has to ask: is Engleby capable of telling the whole truth? Engleby can be seen as a lament for a generation and the country it failed. This is also a poignant account of the frailty of human consciousness.

Sebastian Faulks' newest audiobook is a bolt from the blue, unlike anything he has done before: contemporary, demotic, heart-wrenching, and funny in the deepest shade of black.

Critic reviews

"Brilliantly read by Michael Maloney, who makes Mike Engleby chippy, offhand, disconnected and seriously weird by turn. Over 30 odd years he tells us about his schooldays and university, about the girl he loved who disappeared one night and was never seen again, about the friendships he made and those he didn¿t. A compelling, disconcerting listen as you search for the truth only Engleby knows, seeing those he describes through his eyes, the fellow students and household names ¿ and always the mystery of what really happened at any time in Engleby¿s life." Weird, unsettling, profoundly sad and also blackly funny, this tale is utterly absorbing. Sebastian Faulkes has an amazing ability to get right under the skin of his character, Engleby, and the period and locations all ring true. There is an absolutely brilliant reading by Michael Maloney. Listen to this, and I don't think you will forget Mike Engleby in a hurry.

My first foray into audiobooks and what a perfect start. To be honest I was tempted by the length of the audio as it seemed one of the less daunting, however with such an engrossing story and so wonderfully narrated I didn't want it to end. I?m now officially hooked on audiobooks and have embarked on the longer 10 hours of 'Restless' by William Boyd which although just at the half way point it has me listening at every possible opportunity. Both un-put-downable listens!

Superbly Narrated!

Not quite the beautiful romances of other Faulks books. Very well written and extremely well performed by the narrator. I was very much invested with the character so was bitterly disappointed with where the story went I suppose

Not what I expected 🤣

Bullied, savant, loner Engleby's fantasy relationship (at an un-named University that is obviously Cambridge) with the girl who has everything he doesn't, leads him into a dark spiral downwards. Flashes of observations about 70's popular culture add colour and texture to a black comedy. Beautifully written. Really superb narration.
