About this listen

Emma Woodhouse, age 21, is beautiful, wealthy, talented, and smart. The world lies at her feet. She wants for nothing. What could she possibly gift the world in return?

When Emma follows her unfailing instinct for romantic matchmaking, she ensures that the entwined communities of Donwell Abbey, Hartfield, and Randall's Estates in rural 19th-century England are never short of horrifying social embarrassment and misadventure.

Original source material for the movie Clueless, Emma is known for its cast of rich and lively characters, biting social commentary, and a sparkling plot. This time it is narrated by Mary Jane Wells, a multiple Earphone award- and Audie award-winning narrator known for her multi-character reads - surely a match made in heaven.

Arguably Austen's most popular novel, this timeless classic about love and marriage is vivid, captivating, and irresistibly witty.

Mary Jane Wells shows Jane Austen at her best - witty, thoughtful, quick, and tender.

She capture Austen's free indirect speeches (e.g. Mrs Elton's and Miss Bates's) superbly - so convincingly that you forget that an author and a narrator stand between you and the character!

There were a handful of narrative mistakes throughout, but this reflects more on what the the proof listeners and editors might have accomplished to make it a perfect audiobook, than it does on Mary Jane Wells.

This audio book is possibly my favourite narration of a work by Austen (even though 'Emma' is not my favourite Austen novel!) and I will certainly listen to it many times again.

Almost perfect! Will listen to it again and again

Mary Janes Wells is such a good female narrator, one of the best. She was the perfect choice for Emma and created each character separately with her very talented range of voices.

Highly recommended, though whoever made the recording & edited it, didn't check properly.
The book ends (3 chapters from the end).....followed by the penultimate chapter from earlier in the last quarter of the book (Harriet/Frank Churchill's secret), so it was out of sequence. Other than that, great book read by a very talented narrator.

Wonderful adaptation

I so enjoyed listening to this book, the narrator spoke clearly, and created enough of the characterisations for me to imagine each character uttering them.

I have read the book often, but I am not well at present, and find reading strains my eyes and triggers migraines. it has been a joy to "revisit an old friend" without pain, or having to take a long time to complete!

Jane Austen to a T!
