About this listen

Welcome to the AbyssFormaria—a labyrinthine network of underground tunnels—is home to the Fromryr. An alliance of humans, dwarves, elves, and gnomes, they fight an endless war with ancient technologies. Technologies they don’t truly understand but deploy with devastating effect.

Above the surface, exorcist Kalbrayeth Lyander investigates a possible demonic incursion. When he discovers a body imbued with unknown sorceries he finds himself in possession of a secret he never wanted. A secret that threatens to break centuries long alliances and drag Formaria into a war it cannot afford.

Below the surface, Brazier Veranquis, the First Officer of ice miner the Chalice of Amaranth, responds to a distress signal from an unidentified gyre ship. What he and his crew find leaves them fleeing for their lives. When their paths cross Lyander, they realise what they found threatens to bring down all of Formaria.

War is coming and with an enemy outmatching even the mighty Fromryr. Uncertain of who to trust and embroiled in political intrigue, Lyander and Brazier must do everything they can to prevent Formaria’s fall. The odds are against them. But in the abyss, one ship can change the fate of millions.

Eluthienn was an amazing and refreshing take on the fantasy genre. It skillfully blends elements of both fantasy and science fiction, creating a world that feels both familiar and entirely new. From the very first chapters, I was drawn in by the rich world-building, the mysterious lore, and the sense that something much larger is at play beneath the surface.

What really stood out to me was how the story managed to capture the best parts of my favourite fantasy and sci-fi novels — the epic scope, the layered characters, and the deep mythology — while still feeling unique in its own right. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the setting and the history of this world, and I found myself constantly intrigued by the hints and unanswered questions scattered throughout the book.

As the first instalment in the series, Eluthienn does an excellent job of setting the stage for what’s to come. It raises so many compelling questions that I’m eager to see explored in future books. Who are these characters really? What are the deeper forces shaping their world? And how will the threads that were teased here come together later on?

Overall, Eluthienn is a captivating start to what promises to be an incredible series, a must read for anyone who loves immersive worlds, complex stories, and that perfect balance between fantasy and sci-fi. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.

My comments:

While I loved the audio book narration of this story I could not get into the overall book. I found their were lots of characters and events to keep track of and found it hard to remember what I had heard meaning I had to keep going back and re listening to scenes again to refresh myself which meant this was a slow read. In the end after a few hours I had to admit this book was not for me and stop reading. The narration of the audio book being so good kept me listening longer than I probably would have had he not done such a good job. He gave each character their own voice and he had a great master of accents, that is why I tried for as long as I could to persiveer as I really liked the way he performed the narration of this story.

While I did like the authors writing style and his descriptions I just found their was to much happening to quickly which affected my ability to focus on the book. I've never had a book where I have needed to go back and read chapters again during the reading process. When I have been to the event where I will be meeting the author for a book club I am part of I may try this again as he may be able to give advice on how to more easily keep track of what's going on. It's a shame as the story has potential however for someone like myself who is still quite new to the fantacy and sifi jonra it's a bit to deep and involved for me plus the subject matter is not really something I am interested in which also made focusing difficult.

I would highly recommend the narrator of this audio book Adriel Brant, his narration was amazing and his ability to do different accents gave the characters their own voices this is the main reason I tried to continue with the story for as long as I did however in the end I had to admit it was not going to be for me and give up. I hate giving up on books when I have committed to reading for a specific reason however their are times when as a reader you have to admit that a book is not grabbing you even if you want it to. I'm giving this book a 3 star rating due to the fantastic narration of the audio version.

Loved the reader however could not get into it.
