About this listen

Few novels have made a more shattering impact on their society than El Filibusterismo - and its predecessor, Noli Me Tangere, by Jose Rizal. And surely no writer has paid a higher penalty for self-expression. Rizal was executed by firing squad mainly because of these two books.

Filipinos, inspired by Rizal, made the first nationalist revolution in Asia in 1896, established its first democratic republic which survived until 1901, and in 1946, exactly half a century after Rizal's execution, became the first Asians to win independence from Western colonialism. It is not mere patriotic pride that leads Filipinos to acclaim the author of the Noli and El Fili as the first Asian nationalist, and as one who in his way moved the world.

Every Filipino knows Noli Me Tangere, Rizal's classic book which inspired a revolution, though in truth it deserves a global audience. The Fili, its sequel, is far less well known, though in my opinion it is an even greater work: richer, deeper, more emotional, more focused, and more dramatic. It was therefore a delight to discover that Richard E. Grant did not neglect to also record this more obscure masterpiece following his wonderful performance of the Noli. This recording maintains the same bright humour and easy style.

Rizal poured his heart and soul into the Fili's exploration of the morality of subversion in the face of injustice and oppression. As befits a great work, the listener is left to make their own judgement - a judgement which will be passionately informed by both heart and mind as you finish this tale, thanks to the author's scholarship, skill, lived experience, his passionate investment in his people's past and future, and his generational genius.

A wonderful performance of an underrated gem
