Summary

The Syrian plane disintegrated, evaporating in a gush of silvery smoke, rent through with bright white lightning, and the ejecting pilot's body was blown clear of the fuselage. For an instant it was outlined ahead of David's screen, cruciform in shape with arms and legs thrown wide, the helmet still on the head, and the clothing ballooning in the rush of air.

He chose this life. And it may cost him everything.

From a young age it's clear that David Morgan is 'bird' - a natural pilot, most at home in the air. In the South African Air Force he receives plaudits beyond his years, and even his family begins to accept that David will do anything to stay away from the Morgan billion-dollar business and to keep flying instead.

Following his dream and in pursuit of Debra, a beautiful young Israeli writer, David soon joins the Israeli Defence Force and finds himself caught up in the country's struggles. But when he pays a terrible price for his choices, will he be able to become the man he always hoped - or will he choose to disappear into the skies?

An action-packed thriller from global best seller Wilbur Smith.

Another Winner by Wilbur Smith

I read all the Wilbur Smith novels when I was in the Navy, that was 22 years ago that I left.
This is the first that I have read since then and it kept me enthralled as all the others did.

Alright I suppose

Not a bad yarn but it's a bit slow and never really takes off. Just came across as a bit aimless. It's well written though and mostly well read in this performance.

Sensitive narration

I’ve read this, what I consider Smith’s most emotionally charged novel (of those I’ve read), a couple of times over the last 40 odd years. This I enjoyed and also found very difficult in places, the imagery very graphic and emotional content overwhelming. The narrator however, I thought handled the story sensitively. My own reaction perhaps intensified by familiarity with most of the locations. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to read a fictional book based solely on its description in another book, as much as I have here.

Good story but hasn’t aged well

I love Wilbur Smith and think he’s a fantastic story teller. This was another good story but it has dated worse than some of the others and made me squirm at times.

This book I read 15 years ago and I loved it then and I still love it now a true beautiful love story but not just that it’s a thriller as well edge of your seat sometimes 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Excellent

I first read this book years ago and now realise how much of the background I missed - this is a truly amazing book, written by a master of his art.

Subtly differences to normal style

Firstly, a reviewer wrote “a poor ending” or such like. Everyone has their own personal opinions of course but I simply couldn’t understand the comment. It’s a fittingly moving ending. Yes, a whole new book could have followed, this ending left what happens next to your imagination and desires.

This really is a no-surprises novel. You will have a fair stab at every event. It is beautifully written and the narration is top notch.

4* because of the predictability.

Not his best work

Didn't really gel with this book. A life story of a pilot, it was snapshots of different times. the language was very very descriptive.. too much.. I got frustrated by it. It felf like some of it was put in just for the author to satisfy himself, rather than the reader.
The ending, when it came, was very unsatisfactory and quick, almost.. that's enough now, I'm tired, let's finish it.
Struggled to complete and left me feeling unsatisfied.
