Story
It's often said that when tragedy strikes, the victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. But not Harry and Alice French. Assaulted by masked men looking for a mysterious package and a man named Renshaw, Alice and Harry manage to convince them that there has been a terrible mix-up. But nothing prepares Alice and Harry for the web they find themselves trapped in after their assailants leave. Especially as Alice hasn't been completely honest.

On a cold January morning, a nightmare awaits in a small Sussex village. A deranged young man goes on the rampage, shooting everyone in his path before taking his own life. It is a senseless, tragic event, but sadly not an unfamiliar one. At least, that's what everyone thinks. Only Julia Trent - believed to be the sole survivor - knows there was a second man involved.

I wrap my arms around the tree trunk, pressing my cheek against it until the bark digs in and the missing poster is finally secured. I try not to look at the photograph on it. At the features so similar to mine. Perhaps this will be the year someone comes forward. Were crucial mistakes made by detectives from the very beginning? Could the pressure of living two lives have led my sister to run away - or even end it? Or did someone in her tight circle of friends and family have reason to want her gone? Someone out there must know something.

Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

Enjoyable
This was quite good. The narration was extremely dubious at times but most of the characters were very well done. Though it was extremely convoluted and could easily have lost 2-3 hours, I enjoy long listens/reads so I’m not objecting to the length which was only 11-12 hours. But that’s just my opinion. It was still a decent book.

Weak leading !lady.
Lead female character was annoying and too much of a perfectionist. She seemed to whine her way through the story. The only interesting character was the villain. Author repeatedly took cheap shots against President Trump and conservatives in general. Petty political jabs took the place of meaningful text.
