About this listen

Working from recently discovered files left by his father, Brian Herbert and best-selling novelist Kevin J. Anderson bring us Dune: House Atreides, the prequel, which captures all the complexity and grand themes of the original work while weaving a new tapestry of great passion and momentous destiny into a saga that expands the tale written by Frank Herbert more than 30 years ago.

It is the year 10,154 of the Imperial Calendar, and for four decades the planet Arrakis - called Dune by its inhabitants - has been ruled by the Harkonnen family. But the seeds of change have been sown. On Arrakis, an idealistic young planetologist, Pardot Kynes, goes out into the desert to learn the secrets of its giant sandworms and the priceless Spice they create. And on another planet, Caledon, young Leto Atreides is nearly ready to become duke. The blood feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen is about to begin.

Drawing on notes, outlines and correspondence Frank Herbert left behind at his death, House Atreides is a breathtaking story of war, treachery, decadence and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming odds.

Amazing first chapter a brilliant job by all involved. It is so good finally knowing the origin of some of the characters from Dune. Any fans won't be disappointed.

Amazing

Being a huge fan of the film I decided to start the series with this prequel and what a joy this book is.
It sets up the listener perfectly to the world of Dune that you are about to enter...

Absolutely stunning...

I usually avoid books in a series which haven’t been written by the original author, but I am so glad I took note of all the five star reviews. This provides fascinating background to some of the key players and relationships that underpin Dune.

My only quibble with the performance is that more variation between character voices would have been helpful, but perhaps that’s a consequence of such a large number of characters. I originally opted for 4 stars for performance, but on second thoughts I’ve upped it to 5.

I’ve already downloaded book 2. Highly recommended for any Dune fan.

Excellent addition to the Dune saga

I've listened to the original dune. While this isn't as good as that in either story or performance it is still very good.

I read the original dune books years ago. Recently with the new film coming out I decided to listen to that and then have gone to this after a break.

It goes back in time but features characters you know from dune. I'm yet to go back to the even older ones, will see how I go after house harkonnen and house corrino!

After an hour I was hooked

Having finished Legends and then Schools, I rolled right into houses and am enjoying it. A challenge of any prequel is certain things have to happen for the original Dune to happen (Leto won’t be killed) but it tackles this well and keeps the suspense throughout.
