About this listen

There's a calm before the storm….

In 2159, the Democratic State Force gains ground every day. As they fight to bring representative democracy back, they become heroes to the citizens indentured to the United Corporations of America. Widely spread guerilla units support the first civilian protests the country has seen in decades. Now it’s the Corporations on the defensive. And they are getting desperate.

On Base 1407, the Wildcards start to think they just might help the former United States wake up from its nightmare after all. In spite of the hints of internationally banned weapons the Corporations may have up their sleeves, there’s hope. People whisper that maybe, someday, they might just win. But you should never say something like that too loud.

Fate’s a bitch. You don’t want to tempt her.

This is another emotional, painful, hopeful, compelling book in the Aces High, Jokers Wild series. I love these characters and the found family they have created. Aiden, especially, has grown and changed so much, and gotten so much stronger, since becoming the Wild Cards commander. I love seeing the existing relationships flourish and new ones form. The way the author interweaves the personal stories with the struggle for freedom and independence is fantastic, with neither overshadowing the other. After recent Wild Cards victories and increasing resistance to the Corporations' iron fist by the citizens, the Corporations are being backed into a corner, and they strike back with a dormant and deadly virus that infects the Duster bases. Will they find a cure or is this the end of the fight? There is love and loss both in this piece of the story and a compelling and suspenseful struggle for survival. If you thought the authors upped the ante before, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Kirt Graves narration is just the best. He does a fantastic job giving each character their own, discernable voice, and infuses them with such emotion and feeling, he easily doubles the impact of the written story.
