El pueblo de Chinchero -a 28 kilómetros del Cusco- estaba, en 1970, en un territorio hermoso, todavía intocado por la maquinaria aplastante del turismo masivo. Hasta ahí llegó el joven y conflictivo Dennis Hopper para rodar la que vislumbraba como una obra maestra de la contracultura hippie: The Last Movie. Era un western extraño, donde tanto como los cowboys destacaban las gentes de un lugar perdido de los Andes, en una propuesta que no era otra cosa que un corrosivo ataque a Hollywood.
Aunque la expectativa era máxima ante la nueva película del actor y director de Easy Rider, nada salió como Dennis Hopper había previsto. Durante el rodaje se tejieron cientos de rumores sobre “sexo, drogas y rocanrol”, y todo aquello le pasó factura. La crítica no entendió la película, y tampoco sus productores, que, apenas una semana después de su estreno, vetaron su exhibición durante más de cuarenta años.
