Summary

Nicholas Briggs reads this brand new novelisation of a thrilling screen adventure for the Ninth Doctor and Rose.

'The entire Dalek race, wiped out in one second. I watched it happen. I made it happen!'

The Doctor and Rose arrive in an underground vault in Utah in the near future. The vault is filled with alien artefacts. Its billionaire owner, Henry van Statten, even has possession of a living alien creature, a mechanical monster in chains that he has named a Metaltron.

Seeking to help the Metaltron, the Doctor is appalled to find it is in fact a Dalek - one that has survived the horrors of the Time War, just as he has. And as the Dalek breaks loose, the Doctor is brought back to the brutality and desperation of his darkest hours spent fighting the creatures of Skaro... this time with the Earth as their battlefield.

Nicholas Briggs, who voices the Daleks in the BBC TV series, reads Robert Shearman's novelisation of his own 2005 TV script.

This exceeded my expectations in so many ways. The use of different perspectives, and the Dalek's in particular, brought something to this story that took it beyond the usual Who audiobook and, indeed, Who TV episode. I'll be listening to this again many times I suspect.

Just brilliant

Verisimilitude as Shearman weaves it. To quote Pratchett “we don’t do nice, we do right” [witches].

Much more than the TV can expose.

A wonderful expansion of this heartbreaking and profoundly disturbing tale, providing much more interesting character insights and new recurring themes tying it all together. One potential criticism, however, might be that Shearman seems rather uninterested in the Doctor and Rose - they feel a bit like extras in the story of the real main character, the titular Dalek.

How the TV episode should have been

Nicholas Briggs rocked as Daleks and the narrator. He also did a grand job as the 9th Doctor, especially when he scolded Van Sttatten for how his recklessness, his vanity, his greed, and his arrogance caused the Dalek attack.
Rose was sweet. She helped the Metaltron Dalek although it was a muto-cyborg.
A pity the Metaltron died. He'd be a great companion.
Nice cameo from the War Doctor. Miss him.

A fantastic Dalek drama.

Nicholas Briggs is a excellent choice. He is voice of the Daleks and sounds a bit like the 9th Doctor. I think is one of the best new stories.

A good Dalek story
