About this listen

'It's down there. In the darkness. In the pipeline. Waiting.' The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Jamie and Victoria to the south coast of present-day Earth. Something nasty is lurking in the gas pipelines of the North Sea, and before long the nearby refinery is under attack. Landing on a foam-covered beach, the travellers are at first mistaken for saboteurs. A number of the refinery personnel have been behaving strangely, and the base chief, Robson, is showing serious signs of stress. Meanwhile Maggie Harris, having been stung by a mysterious frond of sea vegetation, is menaced by the sinister engineers Oak and Quill. As sentient foam and weed combine to frightening effect, it soon becomes clear that the danger emanates from beneath the sea. Can that really be a heartbeat coming from deep inside the refinery pipes? Will the Doctor and his friends be in time to prevent an entire takeover of Earth - and will they all escape with their lives? First broadcast in 1968, 'Fury from the Deep' is the last story to feature Deborah Watling as the Doctor's companion Victoria. Long missing from the television archives, it is regarded as a classic adventure from the era of the Second Doctor.© and (P)1993, 2004 BBC Audiobooks LTD Entertainment & Performing Arts Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Science Fiction Heartfelt

without a doubt this works better as an audio. bbc budgets were never huge, and writhing tentacles foam monsters from the '60s are never good. great audio though

works so much better as an audio

It’s a story that heavily needs the visuals to compliment the audio for me. This was my first time listening to a missing audio. It may just be preference but all I could think whilst listening is how much I’d have loved to have seen this.

The performances are amazing! The music and atmospherics are incredibly well done and the tone is very eerie. But the lack of actual visuals really did affect my experience.

It’s a terrific story but if you can get the animation. It maybe worth going there first :)

I remember this story from my childhood. The black & white television images seemed to enhance the creeping fear of the seaweed creatures. I can honestly say that I have never looked at seaweed since without thinking of this story. The performances of the cast are excellent. Building up the menace of the unknown enemy to climatic ending. The whole story is immensly atmospheric and is in my mind a classic of the Patrick Troughton era. Doctor Who fans will not be disapointed, this is from the days when kids watched from behind pillows and the sofa!!!!

Excellent sound recording of a lost classic. Furthermore it justifies its reputation as one of the greats of the black and white era of Doctor Who. Such a shame that no episodes survive in visual medium. Fraser Hines provides just the right amount of narration to explain the visuals without interrupting the flow of the drama. The best I have listened to of this range since the Daleks Master plan with Peter Purves.

And no they don't make them like this anymore...
