About this listen

'If deaths are not investigated, then the authorities cannot be held to account and democracy is threatened. And if deaths are not investigated, we are not a society that values human life.'

Inspired from a young age to help the marginalised and voiceless, Leslie Thomas KC has dedicated his career to fighting for the underdog and holding the State to account. This intimate and personal record of some of the most significant, controversial and disturbing legal cases of the last fifty years lays bare the very heart of the law enforcement and judicial process.

It's an unforgettable account of an idealistic and outspoken lawyer's coming of age as a Black man in London, and a powerful portrait of the lives of those he has fought for. From the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, to the deaths of Christi and Bobby Shepherd by carbon monoxide poisoning, the Birmingham Pub Bombings and the police shooting of Mark Duggan, Do Right and Fear No One present a blistering argument for a level playing field in the pursuit of justice.

'Leslie has done more for the families of those who die in custody or at the hands of the police than any other single lawyer' (Louise Christian)

Having read all of the Secret Barrister books I had become somewhat despondent as to the prospects for the UK Justice system, be that Civil or Criminal. Knowing that Barristers such as Lesley Thomas KC still exist is therefore very reassuring. It’s also an encouraging book for any parent whose child is going off the rails a little when it comes to academic achievement: It can still work out well, as Lesley’s book is testament to.

Reassuring that Human Rights are being defended

Okay for the legal details re becoming a barrister and the old boys network. Some of the book grabbed me others I skipped so it’s really a pick and mix book. It did give me a better idea surrounding the extra problems he had because of his skin colour. I thought it was well read. Bought as a BOGOF.

Useful for learning about becoming a barrister

Recommended for anyone with an interest in civil liberties and HR in the UK, or anyone willing to examine the continued operation of racism, both on a systemic and individual level.

a necessary reflection on modern Britain

Brilliant book, interesting insights, must listen, you do not need to be in the law profession to appreciate it

Excellent, very candid, a must listen

the story is compelling but it's so difficult to listen to. random pauses make it hard to understand when or if a sentence has finished or if it's just a random pause before the sentence will continue.

Volume discrepancies that seem to be caused by the distance from the mic, loud paper rustling and generally stilted narration.

Good, but too difficult to listen to
