Summary

In this major work, Father Thomas Keating, with Tom S. interviewing, reflects on the wisdom and legacy of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step method and its connections to, and similarities with, the Christian mystical traditions of centering prayer and Lectio Divina. In conversation with a long-time member of AA meetings, Father Thomas talks insightfully about surrendering to one's Higher Power and the journey that must be undertaken for the healing of the soul to begin.

"All spiritual traditions have a wisdom literature. Alcoholics Anonymous is a spiritual tradition. Its influence and spread in the present century is going to depend on how well each generation of those in recovery assimilate and interiorize the basic wisdom that is enshrined in the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions." - Thomas Keating

Want to get sober? Read this

I’ve been practicing Centering prayer for years, on and off. It works. A close family member struggles with alcohol addiction and is receiving help from this practice. The explanations of the 12 steps brings so much comfort and hope. Recommend this for everyone.

Twelve Steps according to Thomas Keating

For Thirty six years I have been studying 12 Steps using the Big Book and 12 and 12.
Thomas Keatings book tells us THE WHY these 12 Steps work from multiple perspectives using science, philosophy, physiology, psychology and theology.....He is clear on WHY and HOW these 12 Steps move the mind and body toward hope, love, honesty, trust, intuitive thinking and away from depression, anxiety and low self esteem.

Great content, hard to follow

This is an interview transcript read by a single individual. Dan Carroll is pleasant to listen to. It is often hard to tell who is speaking. The interviewer or Father Keating. Made the book a challenge to get through.

Dense but generous, down to earth, & enlightening

Dense but generous, down to earth, & enlightening. There were many parts that I stopped and relistened to or wrote down excerpts from. As someone in recovery and on a spiritual path I found this book very worthwhile.
