LESSONS FROM A BOSS-LEVEL DISRUPTOR AND GAMING LEGEND

Reggie Fils-Aimé, retired President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America Inc., shares leadership lessons and inspiring stories from his unlikely rise to the top.

Although he’s best known as Nintendo's iconic President of the Americas—immortalized for opening Nintendo’s 2004 E3 presentation with, “My name is Reggie, I'm about kicking ass, I'm about taking names, and we're about making games”—Reggie Fils-Aimé’s story is the ultimate game plan for anyone looking to beat the odds and achieve success.

Learn from Reggie how to leverage disruptive thinking to pinpoint the life choices that will make you truly happy, conquer negative perceptions from those who underestimate or outright dismiss you, and master the grit, perseverance, and resilience it takes to dominate in the business world and to reach your professional dreams.

As close to sitting one-on-one with the gaming legend as it gets, you will learn:

  • About the challenges Reggie faced throughout his life and career—from his humble childhood as the son of Haitian immigrants, to becoming one of the most powerful names in the history of the gaming industry.
  • What it takes to reach the top of your own industry, including being brave enough to stand up for your ideas, while also being open to alternative paths to success.
  • How to create vibrant and believable visions for your career, your team, and your company.
  • How to maintain relentless curiosity and know when to ask questions to shatter the status quo.

I love when a book is read by the author and added interview at the end was also interesting

“Disrupting the Game” by Reggie is a decent book about his professional career. Fans of his time at Nintendo will certainly enjoy the many fun anecdotes, which are entertaining enough to keep the reader engaged. His years at other companies also offer interesting insights into his way of thinking and decision-making.

At times, the book feels a bit too self-congratulatory, especially when he repeatedly emphasizes how great certain products or campaigns were that he worked on. That comes across as a bit over the top. Then again, he probably wouldn’t have become so successful without at least a little ego.

His interactions with the big names at Nintendo are fun to read. Although I sometimes wonder if things really happened the way he describes them, or if some parts were exaggerated.

The book ends with an interview with Geoff Keighley, which actually feels more like a podcast episode where the two recall memories of working together at E3s and Game Awards. However, the ending of this bonus section feels quite abrupt. A more conclusive closing would have been better.

You can tell Reggie isn’t a natural audiobook narrator. At the start, it almost sounds like you’re listening to an AI. Fortunately, it gets noticeably better halfway through. Overall, it’s not a bad book. For fans of Reggie and Nintendo, it’s definitely an enjoyable read. But don’t expect to learn anything truly new.

Entertaining memoir with a hint of self-praise

Reggie is a wordsmith who paints the tail of a life most can only dream of with hard work, persistence, drive and determination he carved a rather interesting career that lead to several of nintendos biggest wins, his tale is also a tail of trust, friendship and ability to know when the time is right to bow out and leave a place better than he found it. As an avid biography reader this is such an enjoyable story full of heat and trust.

An inspiring read or listen in this case

I will just put buzzwords next to each other. An extraordinary adventure from somebody, who managed to overcome obstacles and use his disruptive mind to give much joy to many, who enjoyed products from the companies he worked for.
If your are a games and want to look a little behind the curtains, well, this is for you.

A must for all gamers, and leaders, and all else

If you like Nintendo and would like to hear about his business career before working at Nintendo then look no further. He does say “So what” lots of times though! It’s an interesting story I enjoyed it.
