In Mitochondria and the Future of Medicine, naturopathic doctor Lee Know tells the epic story of mitochondria - the widely misunderstood and often-overlooked powerhouses of our cells. The legendary saga began over two billion years ago, when one bacterium entered another without being digested, which would evolve to create the first mitochondrion. Since then, for life to exist beyond single-celled bacteria, it's the mitochondria that have been responsible for this life-giving energy.

Millions of people are suffering from chronic illnesses that, unbeknownst to them, are the result of exposure to environmental toxins and infectious agents such as mold and Borrelia, which causes Lyme disease. Millions. Because the symptoms of these illnesses are so varied and unusual, many of these individuals have sought medical care only to be dismissed, as if what they are experiencing is “in their head”. Many (if not most) have tried to tough it out and continue to function without hope of improvement. Unfortunately, their illnesses are very real.

Story
For decades, the medical community has looked to a variety of reasons for why we age, and the consensus is that no-one dies of old age; they die of age-related diseases. That's because ageing is not a disease - it is inevitable. But what if everything you think you know about ageing is wrong? What if ageing is a disease? And that disease is curable. In Lifespan, Dr David Sinclair, one of the world’s foremost authorities on genetics and ageing, argues just that.

Today, we are told that medical interventions increased our lifespan and single-handedly prevented masses of deaths. But is this really true? Dissolving Illusions details facts and figures from long-overlooked medical journals, books, newspapers, and other sources. Using myth-shattering information, this book shows that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical interventions are not responsible for the increase in lifespan and the decline in mortality from infectious diseases.

Summary
A leading expert in epigenetics - how genes switch on and off - provides a revolutionary, holistic, and personalized approach to better health by improving how your genes behave to prevent and reverse common ailments, chronic illnesses, and life-threatening diseases, including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, anxiety, depression, digestive issues, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and more.
Your genes have a tremendous impact on your health. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Ben Lynch reveals that while you can't change the genes you were born with, you can change how they affect you.
When your genes are working properly, you feel energized and healthy. But when your genes are "dirty", or not functioning optimally, your health suffers. Some genes are "born dirty" - they have certain variations that can cause you problems. Other genes merely "act dirty" in response to your environment, diet, or lifestyle. You can optimize both types of dirty genes by cleaning them up through healthy eating, good sleep, stress relief, environmental detox, and other holistic and natural means.
An experienced researcher in the emerging science of gene abnormalities who has successfully treated thousands of clients, Dr. Lynch offers a simple questionnaire to identify which of the top seven dirty genes could be undermining your health. Then he offers targeted plans - including foods and recipes, supplements, and environmental detox - to clean up your dirty genes, eliminate symptoms, and optimize your physical and mental health.
Many of us have been taught that our genes doom us to the disorders that run in our families. But Dr. Lynch shows that you can rewrite your genetic destiny - once you know how. Dirty Genes provides a practical, personalized protocol to make the most of your genetic inheritance, now and for the rest of your life.

Great content shocking narration!!
I have not left a review on an audible before, but I have to say that I found Dr Ben Lynch very arrogant and he doesn't even mention Dr Bruce Lipton at all who is the scientist that discovered epigenetics over 30 years ago! He practically claims all the glory as though he discovered it himself. I did not enjoy the narration at all. GREAT content, but buy the book, not the audio!

Struggled to finish
I really struggled to finish this book. The author's voice was easy to listen to but the content was heavy going. All the talk about COMT gene and the other genes lost me completely as they didn't relate to me. If the words were more easily transferable and not soooo scientific I would have enjoyed this book much more.

Eye opening book on epigenetics - Worthwhile Read!
Book is eye opening. This books explains how you genes can get dirty or how you can change your environmental factors to alleviate dirty genes. I've bought all 3 versions - hardcover, Kindle and audiobook.
The book refers to a reference file called "the enhancement" that is not yet loaded on audible.com. It is supposed to contain additional information, checklist and recipes, etc. Looking forward to the publisher to post the PDF file.
I would recommend that other audiobook reviewers hold off of putting a negative review because the PDF has not been loaded yet. The publisher has been notified to correct issue.

Ugh, don't even bother!!
This was one of the worst books I ever downloaded, and let me tell you why. First of all, I love audiobooks about epigenetics, health, disease, and biology -- so I'm familiar with this non-fiction genre. Secondly, I drive long distances regularly, with 5+ hour drives. I downloaded this book right before a very long road trip, and this is essentially how it went:
"Is it possible you could have dirty genes? Please take our questionnaire in the enhancement PDF..."
"For a list of diseases, syndromes, and issues that are likely the result of dirty genes, please refer to the enhancement..."
"What are some of the symptoms of dirty genes? Please read page 2 and 3 of the enhancement..."
"For a complete list of the kinds of things that can dirty up your genes, please refer to the enhancement PDF..."
"Foods and nutrients can help scrub dirty genes clean. For a list of those foods, please refer to the PDF enhancement..."
You get the idea. A complete joke. If I wanted to continually read and refer to something on paper or screen, then I would have bought the Kindle version. Nearly every other audiobook I've listened to in the biomedical sciences have included every list, every word, every questionnaire, every footnote in the audiobook, because most of the time people listening don't have the desire or the ability to go into a computer or device and download a document. That's the whole purpose of an audiobook. I don't understand why the author or publisher would allow it with this one, but the whole thing just comes off as lazy and incomplete. I'm returning for a credit.
(Side note, at the same time I also downloaded "The Longevity Code" by Kris Verburgh, MD which is on a similar topic. MUCH more thorough, so I recommend that instead.)

Lots of helpful information
If you've done 23andme Genetic testing, you have enough info to know which areas of this audio book to pay attention to and you'll get a lot more out of it if you've done the Strategene report. For multiple people in your family, you can simply take the list of genes and RS numbers and find the SNPs using the browse raw data tool so you don't have to buy a copy of the statagene report for each person in the family. The book only addresses the "Super 7" so COMT, DAO, MTHFR, MAOA, GST/GPX, NOS3, and PEMT.
This book oversimplifies it a lot and I'm sure there are a lot of other genes that influence the outcome of our health that we don't know enough about yet, but one thing is obvious is that the methylation pathways are very important as is the PEMT gene. One thing I realized is that based on my own individual SNPS a lot of the recommended foods are foods that I crave and / or tolerate well. For example, Beets, coffee, and carbohydrates.
The section on the influence of the COMT and MAOA genes on personality were also interesting, It's not super detailed but gave me something to think about when evaluating my own personality traits.
I return a ton of books, but I plan to keep this one. The PDF is awesome as well, it's nearly an ebook of the audio book. I understand a lot of people don't want to look at reference material, but listening to someone read a list from a table is BORING. Some information is not well suited to audio format, but the reference material is A+ i did notice a few typos. For example, it stated one nutrient was a mineral, when it's actually an amino acid which helps the body process minerals.
The narrator is great. I'd happily listen to him read something else. My next listen is the Longevity Code.

No PDF
The pdf promised in this purchase has not been provided and it makes the material incomplete. Without the pdf, the book can’t be used as it was intended as Ben refers back to it constantly.
I’m hoping someone can assist with this?

Nothing is actually said and no science behind it
I was very disappointed in this book as he says nothing whatever about the science behind anything or how he found anything out. He also never actually tells you how to fix things, just to listen to how you feel which I already know how to do. There is about 30min of some useful info if you don't know how to listen to your body or know about supplements but the rest is just things like "Sally felt x,y,z so she had to change things" doesn't say how (except to eat organic and nothing processed which is nothing new coming from homeopaths) or explain why; just a bunch of stuff about how a bunch of people felt. He claims to do research but there is not ounce of science in this book. I was looking for more info about MTHFR gene mutations and there is nothing useful here.

So many acronyms.
I finished this in about one week. It started off strong then started to drag and repeat and become redundant. Many acronyms to follow even with a fundamental knowledge of genetics. The author doesn't necessarily encourage supplementation, but then names several supplements you can take. Additionally, it sounds like the natural recipe for fixing most of your "dirty" genes is a whole foods diet with lots of leafy greens, adequate sleep, lowered daily stress, and exercise properly. It is really nothing new.

great information, incomplete delivery
this book is revolutionary. The information in here is cutting-edge and has the potential to change many people's lives. However throughout the entire book there is a reference to surveys questionnaires and some sort of enhancement packet which is nowhere to be found in this audible version. if the whole book hinges on a certain set of surveys and an enhancement then the overall picture delivered here is mediocre at best. Knowing this I would buy the hard back every single day of the week and twice on Sunday.

There Has to Be Something Better
I was super excited to start this book. Unfortunately, I was sadly disappointed. First, the author can’t stop bragging about himself. The book almost sounds like an infomercial. Also, the narrator continually tells the listening to refer to the “Enhancement” PDF. Ugh! I bought the audible version for a reason. I can’t check out a PDF while I am driving, etc. Don’t waste your credit!

A quick listen for a lifetime of great health
First off, the narrator was so pleasant to listen to :) secondly, wow! Dr. Lynch really makes it easy to understand your genes, and it only took a few days to listen to the whole book. I was able to go about my day while simultaneously learning about my genes. I’m going to order the physical book on amazon now so that I can highlight certain sections and do the questionnaires (not available through audible). I recommend this book to everyone! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
