Summary

Dinosaur is the first novel in the New World series, brilliantly brought to life by BBC's Chris Barrie (Red Dwarf).

The leader of a sinister political group hatches an insane plan to save humanity. Fighting to stop them could doom us all. When every action and decision may determine the fate of everyone who has ever lived, the right choice is not always clear. However, for one man, there is no choice at all...

Captain James Douglas sets off on a mundane transport and supply mission that quickly descends into disaster. Leading a fledgling society through a wild and hostile world was not part of his brief. Nor was the custodianship of all human life, history, and endeavor. Worse still, an enemy hides among his passengers, while the knowledge of a boy, just days out of school, may be all that stands between mankind and extinction.

The crew of the USS New World is lost almost 100 million years ago in Mid-Cretaceous Gondwana. It is the time of the dinosaur...for now.

Critic reviews

“A highly suspenseful time-travel adventure series, combining a clever mix of detailed prehistory and history throughout - not to mention some great bad guys. The twists and turns really keep you guessing, while the darkness and humour really keep you reading. Not to be missed.” (Black Sheep Books)

“Spaceships, wormholes and dinosaurs! Don't miss it.” (Stephen Baxter, author of The Long Earth)

“Epic! Full of big ideas and clever protagonists! A thrilling tale told on a huge scale. Llewelyn clearly knows - and loves - his dinosaurs, a knowledge and passion that shines through. The result is a big, bold adventure. Classic science-fiction, dinosaurs, crashed spaceship, what's not to love?” (Simon Guerrier)

Sci-Fi with a Real Story

Goodness me, I feel as if I've held my breath for 19 hours. Many authors can write a gripping tale but what lifts this one for me is Stephen Llewelyn's character writing. Some might consider the baddies too bad and the goodies too good, painted with rather a thick brush but I ended up happily booing the one and cheering for the other. What however, helps these characters to truly sing is the quite remarkable voice acting skill of Chris Barrie. He made every character unique yet thoroughly believable. With a room full of contrasting individuals in earnest exchange you could be forgiven for assuming an entire cast was involved. No, really, just listen to an excerpt to hear what I mean. I am impatient for the next volume Audible!
Only another 100 hours to go Mr. Barrie!

Can't wait for next in the series.

I enjoyed every minute of this book, so engrossing I just wanted to keep on listening through the night. The book is beautifully written and the narration by Chris Barrie is quite simply brilliant, Chris uses his expertise to give every character their own voice and personality, so much more than just a reading, Chris gives a performance. The only problem I have now is I can't wait for the next book(s) in the series, please hurry it on here when it's available Audible.

Good narrator but poor writing.

Got this because I loved Chris Barrie's narration of Red Dwarf books but the writing here is pretty poor. Clearly aimed at kids but very plodding/slow in places. You wait a long time for the dinosaurs and then it manages to make them quite dull.

The perfect audiobook

Spaceships, dinosaurs, colourful likeable characters, Chris Barrie with his always impeccable and cleverly pitched performance. This could be the perfect audiobook. So enjoyable. Thank you. Excited for the next one. :)

Amazing performance by Chris Barrie as expected.

Great narration, each character brought to life by Barrie.

The story showed such promise to begin with, a unique and interesting plot. I throughly enjoyed the first several hours.

It did begin to drag however, feeling like the time spent on ship prior to landing among the dinosaurs dragged on. Then once back on earth it was all a bit anticlimactic.

Then the ending was fumbled. I was left wondering where was the story going, what was the big reveal to be? Unfortunately, I felt the story ended with little tension and a slightly confusing sense of what would be happening next…
