About this listen
'This book is a must for everyone interested in illuminating the idea of unexplainable genius' - QUESTLOVE
Equal parts biography, musicology, and cultural history, Dilla Time chronicles the life and legacy of J Dilla, a musical genius who transformed the sound of popular music for the twenty-first century.
He wasn't known to mainstream audiences, and when he died at age thirty-two, he had never had a pop hit. Yet since his death, J Dilla has become a demigod, revered as one of the most important musical figures of the past hundred years. At the core of this adulation is innovation: as the producer behind some of the most influential rap and R&B acts of his day, Dilla created a new kind of musical time-feel, an accomplishment on a par with the revolutions wrought by Louis Armstrong and James Brown. Dilla and his drum machine reinvented the way musicians play.
In Dilla Time, Dan Charnas chronicles the life of James DeWitt Yancey, from his gifted Detroit childhood to his rise as a sought-after hip-hop producer to the rare blood disease that caused his premature death. He follows the people who kept Dilla and his ideas alive. And he rewinds the histories of American rhythms: from the birth of Motown soul to funk, techno, and disco. Here, music is a story of what happens when human and machine times are synthesized into something new.
This is the story of a complicated man and his machines; his family, friends, partners, and celebrity collaborators; and his undeniable legacy. Based on nearly two hundred original interviews, and filled with graphics that teach us to feel and "see" the rhythm of Dilla's beats, Dilla Time is a book as defining and unique as J Dilla's music itself.

I’ve just finished reading Dilla Time (The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla). The author uses Dilla’s many names interchangeably- James DeWitt Yancey, J Dilla throughout the book. I’ve done the same in my review.
It is forensically researched and strives to maintain balance, particularly in terms of not “picking sides” when it comes to J Dee’s legacy. The book name checks lots of people, at times it can be difficult to stay on top of who’s who, but what really comes through is that Dilla, despite working alone, was surrounded by people and that he had a huge impact on them.
The book takes a great deal of time to detail the actual music. It includes beat grids, with pictorial examples in the book and audio examples in the audiobook. Charnas looks at the context from where James Yancey came and how this is reflected in his music. The final third details James Dewitt Yancey’s disputed legacy — the competing claims, the grief, the money, the loyalty tests — and it’s gripping in a way that feels almost novelistic. I found myself genuinely unsettled by how much was left unresolved.
I read the book alongside listening to the audiobook, read by the author. Dan Charnas has a warm and charming voice that was a pleasure to listen to. His love of the subject and a calm neutrality comes through, and I found his voice comforting. It’s a long book and Charnas’ voice made it easy to get through. The small audio sound effects really added to the narrative — aeroplanes taking off, musical examples illustrating what the text was describing. A great deal of care was taken over the audiobook production.
The book is dense and rich and probably worth reading more than once. Listening to the tracks referenced throughout would also be a worthwhile pursuit. I am not familiar with Dilla’s vast catalogue — but that felt like an invitation rather than a barrier.
Highly recommended.
