Summary

Strength from weakness

Disability becomes power

Six stories with one impactful message:

  • A voiceless child painting visions of death
  • A killer with a deadly message plagued by a burden of guilt
  • A priestess divinely empowered to absorb others' pain
  • A soldier fighting for courage in the face of fear
  • A broken warrior-priest on a mission of vengeance
  • A thief desperate to escape the burden of his memories

Betrayed by mind or body, these people struggle to survive in a grim world that takes no pity on the weak. Yet they will discover that they are simply different, not damaged.

You'll be hooked by this collection of fantasy stories that shatters the preconceptions of what is possible. With each word, you'll be drawn in further and further. These stories may even change the way you see the world.

Different, Not Damaged - Essential listening

This audiobook was a gift from the author, and this is my unsolicited and honest opinion.

I loved this collection of short stories set in the fantasy world of Voramis. Six stories about people living with mental and physical disabilities who are not defined by their disability. Written with insight and affection these stories challenge preconceptions and show respect not pity for those afflicted.

We see the suffering of a soldier with Post-Traumatic Disorder relive the traumas as he battles in real time. An inarticulate autistic artist with hyperaesthesia, whose paintings predict deaths, struggles to communicate. A priestess divinely empowered to absorb others' pain. See the blurb.

Just be assured that you will not regret immersing yourself in this audio. The narration is excellent, well paced and beautifully interpreted, I really love short stories, because in a busy life, a story can be enjoyed in any break and savoured in quiet moments before dipping again into the anthology.

Interesting collection

As a disabled person myself it is nice to see a collection where the disabled are not just viewed as an afterthought or a liability.

Also nice to see how twisty they were

Liked that all stories were based in the same world. All of them combined built a bigger picture, a bigger world. Got me highly interested in reading more of the world built. Also nice to see how twisty they were, they felt like decent stories by themselves. Too often shorts leave you feeling unfinished, some of these did but in a good way.

Interesting choice of main characters

I'm a big fan of the Darkblade books so when I got the chance to get this audio book in exchange for a honest review I thought why not. I love it when authors give you glimpses of other characters and events going on in the world they've created happening away from the main story.
First I would have given this audio book 4 and a half stars but I can't. The half star loss is just down to me not liking the narrator's resting/normal voice but I can be picky (I can't listen to my favourite book series because the narrator's voice just doesn't fit for me in my head). But I forgot about this when the action was running you away with it and his voice's for the characters did seem to really fit.
The premise of the main characters each having some kind of disability I thought was interesting, after all we are not all whole in the real world. I won't tell you of every character, don't want to spoil anything 😉 but the autistic monk who braves the sensory onslaught that is the busy city in daylight to save a friend. Unable to get the words in his head past his lips he still runs headlong into the unknown for a friend, he really stuck with me. You can picture him running frantic, screaming in his head what he is unable voice. I urged him onward, felt his frustration that other people couldn't see how he saw.

All in all a good afternoon's listen for me would recommend it you're like me and want as much of the worlds we love as possible.
