Bohumil Harabal, 1914 in Brünn geboren und aufgewachsen im Örtchen Nymburk an der Elbe, gilt als einer der bedeutendsten tschechischen Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Erzählungen, schelmenhafte und skurrile Schilderungen aus dem Leben der einfachen Leute vom Land vermitteln Hrabals enge Verbundenheit mit seiner Heimat. Seinem Onkel Pepin hat er das "bafeln" abgelauscht, den ununterbrochenen, assoziativen Redefluss, der die hier versammelten Erzählungen prägt.
