"Diario de un loco", publicada en 1834, es una historia muy corta, de apenas viente páginas, pero que se compensa con lo hilarante y extraño de su contenido, muy al estilo de Gogol. La historia es escrita a manera de diario íntimo contado en primera persona y ordenado cronológicamente por un funcionario público, llamado Aksenti Ivanovich (42 años) y de un apellido extraño, según comentario de uno de los personajes.
El diario inicia un tal 3 de octubre, no se precisa el año y se va narrando muy escasamente de lo que le va sucediendo al personaje. Generalmente es sobre asuntos oficinescos. En fin, es una obra, que describe un cuadro psicopatológico de un funcionario público y su descarrilamiento mental.
