"Der Malstrom" von Edgar Allan Poe erschien erstmals 1841 und zählt zu den "Tales of Terror". Ein alter Mann gibt wieder, wie er aus einem Schiffswrack und einem Wasserstrudel entkam. Das Werk gilt als früher Vertreter der Gattung Science Fiction. Die Geschichte ist auch bekannt unter dem Namen "Hinab in den Maelström" oder "Sturz in den Mahlstrom".

"Die Maske des roten Todes" erschien erstmals 1842 in Philadelphia in Graham's Magazine, in dessen New Yorker Redaktion E.A. Poe ein Jahr lang als Chefredakteur beschäftigt war. In ihr beschreibt Poe das Scheitern des Versuchs einer Gruppe von Privilegierten, sich vor einer Seuche in Sicherheit zu bringen.
