Summary
Der Ball zu Sceaux ist ein wöchentlich stattfindender Ball in der Provinz. Dort trifft sich die Landbevölkerung, aber auch inkognito eine Menge Pariser Bürger. Das wird Emilie de Fontaine zum Verhängnis. Sie sucht einen hochadeligen, reichen und schönen Mann. Sie begegnet "Longueville" in den sie sich verliebt. Es stellt sich aber heraus, dass er ein Schneider, also ein Bürgerlicher ist. Emilie ist enttäuscht und heiratet einen siebzigjährigen Onkel. Kurze Zeit später muss mit ansehen, wie Longueville ein beträchtliches Vermögens erwirbt und den Pair-Titel erbt.
